This study verifies the interactions between straw size and thawing rates and their impact on the epididymal sperm from this species. Caudae epididymidum from 10 agoutis were subjected to retrograde washing using a coconut water extender (ACP-109c(®) ). Epididymal sperm were evaluated and extended in ACP-109c(®) plus egg yolk (20%) and glycerol (6%). The samples were packaged in 0.25- or 0.50-ml straws, frozen in liquid nitrogen and thawed at 37°C/1 min or 70°C/8 s, followed by a re-evaluation. The use of 0.25-ml straws thawed at 37°C/1 min provided a value of 26.6% for sperm motility. No interactions between straw size and thawing rates were verified on agouti sperm (p > 0.05), but when 0.5-ml straws were thawed at 70°C/8 s, sperm vigour decreased significantly (p < 0.05). It is recommended that the agouti epididymal sperm cryopreserved in ACP-109c(®) extender should be packaged in 0.25- or 0.50-ml straws and thawed at 37°C/60 s.
ABSTRACTEctoparasites cause skin diseases in domestic animals, they often afflict dogs and cats, it may be a possible zoonotic potential. Thus, the present work aimed to describe the mites occurrence, that causes scabes, in dogs and cats, at the city of Mossoro, Rio Grande do Norte state. The study was conducted between february 2002 and january 2007, when there were collected samples from 503 animals (among dogs and cats) through cutaneous smears, individually identified and diagnosised at the Animal Parasitological Laboratory of the Rural Federal University of the semi-arid (UFERSA). The data analysis was performed by means of absolute and relative frequency. Among the dogs, 77 (18.6%) presented some species of mite, from which 70 (90.9%) were tested positive for Demodex canis and 7 (9%) were tested positive for Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis, meanwhile, 26 cats (28.5%) were tested positive, from which 18 (69.2%) felines with Notoedres cati, 4 (15.3%) tested positive for S. Scabiei and 4 (15.3%) with Lynxacarus radovskyi. The canines and felines studied here presented distinctive mites.
In this study, we compared organic and conventional management in a dairy goat production system in Angicos, Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil. Twenty-six Parda Alpina dairy goats were used: 13 in organic management (OM) and 13 in conventional management (CM). The experimental design was completely randomized with two treatments and 13 repetitions. OM practices included estrus synchronization with the "male effect," an herbal-based treatment against endoparasitoses (an extract of lemon [Citrus limonum] and garlic [Allium sativum]) and the control of mastitis using the Embrapa Kit for manual milking with a rosemary pepper (Lippia sidoides) tincture. CM animals received synthetic hormones (Promone®, Prolise®, and Novormon®) for synchronization of estrus, ivermectin for endoparasitoses, and iodized alcohol for mastitis prevention aided by the Embrapa Kit for manual milking. No significant differences were observed between the management types in the pregnancy rate, FEC, FAMACHA© (Faffa Malan Chart) scores, physico-chemical composition of the milk, or somatic cell count (SCC). Both OM and MC had pregnancy rates of 61.54%. The mean values of the egg counts observed in the OM and CM were 24 and 35 eggs g -1 , respectively. The FAMACHA© scores were 1 or 2 and 2, 3, or 4 in OM and CM, respectively. The goats had average weights in OM of 48.53 kg and in CM of 55.92 kg. Milk production, fat, protein, lactose, total solids, and nonfat solids in OM (0.971 kg/day, 2,210, 2,322, 3,306, 7,866, 5,566, respectively) were slightly higher than those in CM (0.946 kg/day, 1,812, 1,812, 2.868, 6.74, 4.928). OM (904,860 cells/mL) and CM (1.02052 million cells/mL) SCC values were similar, with the OM within the acceptable range for milk goats. Organic management was equivalent to conventional management for weight gain, maintenance of animal health standards, reproductive and sanitary control, and milk quantity and quality, and is technically suitable for a dairy goat production system in semiarid conditions. We evaluated the correlation between the assessment of the functional integrity of the sperm membrane by hypoosmotic swelling tes,t using solutions with different osmolarities, and the conventional assessments of fresh semen in goats. A total of 24 ejaculates from three goats was obtained by artificial vagina and immediately submitted to the classical evaluation. Samples were divided into five aliquots and subjected to hypoosmotic test using distilled water (0 mOsm/L), and sodium citrate and fructose solutions at different osmolarities (50; 100; 150 and 200 mOsm/L). The 100 mOsm/L solution showed the highest percentage of reacted sperm (34.8%), but distilled water was the one with the lowest values (20.8%). No significant correlations were detected between the reacted sperm verified by the hypoosmotic swelling test and other semen characteristics (P> 0.05). Nevertheless, we recommend the carry out of the hypoosmotic test by using a 100 mOsm/L sodium citrate and fructose solution to assess the functional integrity of the sperm membrane in caprine species
