Alveolar bone healing after upper incisor extraction in rats is a classical model of preclinical studies. The underlying morphometric, cellular and molecular mechanism, however, remains imprecise in a unique study. Objectives The aim of this study was therefore to characterize the alveolar bone healing after upper incisor extraction in rats by micro computed tomographic (Micro-CT), immunohistochemical and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis.Material and Methods Thirty animals (Rattus norvegicus, Albinus Wistar) were divided into three groups after upper incisors extraction at 7, 14, and 28 days. Micro-CT was evaluated based on the morphometric parameters. Subsequently, the histological analyses and immunostaining of osteoprotegerin (OPG), receptor activator of nuclear kappa B ligand (RANKL) and tartrate resistant acid phosphate (TRAP) was performed. In addition, RT-PCR analyses of OPG, RANKL, the runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), osteocalcin (OC), osteopontin (OPN), osterix (OST) and receptor activator of nuclear kappa B (RANK) were performed to determine the expression of these proteins in the alveolar bone healing.Results Micro-CT: The morphometric parameters of bone volume and trabecular thickness progressively increased over time. Consequently, a gradual decrease in trabecular separation, trabecular space and total bone porosity was observed. Immunohistochemical: There were no differences statistically significant between the positive labeling for OPG, RANKL and TRAP in the different periods. RT-PCR: At 28 days, there was a significant increase in OPG expression, while RANKL expression and the RANKL/OPG ratio both decreased over time.Conclusion Micro-CT showed the newly formed bone had favorable morphometric characteristics of quality and quantity. Beyond the RUNX2, OC, OPN, OST, and RANK proteins expressed in the alveolar bone healing, OPG and RANKL activity showed to be essential for activation of basic multicellular units during the alveolar bone healing.

SUMMARY:The multiplicity of meningiomas or abrupt lesion growth in patients treated with cyproterone acetate suggests that this progestative treatment may promote lesion growth. We report the rapid regression of an incidental meningioma after discontinuation of a 10-year cyproterone acetate treatment. This unique observation suggests that conservative management of meningiomas may be the best option among users of high doses of cyproterone acetate, given that spontaneous regression may occur after hormonal treatment discontinuation.ABBREVIATIONS: FLAIR ϭ fluid-attenuated inversion recovery C yproterone acetate is a synthetic progestin with a powerful antiandrogen property, which is indicated for the treatment of inoperable prostate carcinoma, the reduction of sexual drive in men, or severe signs of androgenization in women. It is also found in smaller quantities in combined oral contraceptives and for treating seborrhea, acne, hirsutism, and moderate androgen-related alopecia. Recent observations of meningioma, often multiple, among users of high doses of cyproterone acetate have raised the suspicion that it may promote the rapid growth of pre-existing or new meningioma.

ResumoEste trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar resumos e palavras-chave de artigos de periódicos publicados em Ciências Sociais por autores brasileiros, a fim de identificar as principais características desses elementos e como isso afeta a representação e recuperação de informação nessa área. Para isso, foi feita uma avaliação de 151 resumos de artigos produzidos por professores da Universidade de São Paulo em três disciplinas, Antropologia, Ciência Política e Sociologia, na tentativa de descobrir como os autores exploraram os tipos de resumo (descritivo, informativo ou descritivo-informativo); num segundo tópico, foram avaliadas as palavras-chave que acompanhavam o resumo e o seu potencial como complemento deste e como ferramenta para relacionar disciplinas. Observou-se que os autores preferem resumos descritivos em detrimento dos informativos, e que, apesar da falta de padronização, as palavras-chave fornecidas pelos autores podem ser usadas como complemento dos resumos e como indicador de algumas relações interdisciplinares. Conclui-se que, apesar da importância de resumos e palavras-chave como elementos de representação de informação, suas funções são pouco exploradas nas Ciências Sociais, o que pode afetar negativamente a recuperação da informação. INTRODUÇÃORepresentar apropriadamente informações contidas em um determinado documento é de fundamental importância para a recuperação informacional, e os termos de indexação, somados aos resumos, são os principais produtos dessa atividade. Juntos, eles descrevem o conteúdo de um registro, indicando seus pontos principais. Nesse sentido, são elementos que facilitam a comunicação do conhecimento, já que funcionam como "ferramentas de representação", necessárias em um processo inicial de filtragem, permitindo assim que a informação flua entre o universo dos documentos originais e o dos usuários de informação (PINTO, 2003).A importância desses dois elementos no processo de representação e recuperação informacional é evidente também no âmbito da comunicação científica. O aumento progressivo do número de publicações e a conseqüente impossibilidade de ler tudo o que é publicado sobre um assunto tornou necessária a aplicação de mecanismos que pudessem traduzir o conteúdo de um documento de maneira mais condensada, sem que houvesse perda de informação. Ao mesmo tempo, o surgimento de bases de dados com abrangência cada vez mais ampla e mesmo o crescimento de publicações científicas on-line tornou necessário o desenvolvimento de padrões de metadados, ou seja, padrões para a extração de elementos relevantes para tanto para a descrição de um documento quanto para a recuperação de informações. The analgesic efficacy of cholinergic agonists and anticholinesterase agents has been widely recognized. The analgesic effect obtained by activating cholinergic mechanisms, however, seems to depend on the experimental pain model utilized for its evaluation. The antinociceptive effect of intraspinal neostigmine was examined in rats submitted concurrently to the tail flick and formalin tests. Neostigmine (8.25 and 16.5 nmol) produced a dose-dependent antinociceptive effect in the tail flick test (a model of phasic pain) and reduced the first phase (phasic pain) of the animal response to formalin also in a dosedependent manner. The second phase (tonic pain) of the response to formalin, however, was slightly reduced after a longer period of time only by the higher dose of the anticholinesterase. The effect of neostigmine was not significantly different when the drug was injected into rats submitted exclusively to the tail flick test. The second phase of the animal response to formalin was slightly reduced by neostigmine (8.25 nmol) and strongly inhibited by the higher dose of the anticholinesterase when injection was made after the first phase. We conclude that phasic and tonic pain can both be controlled by high doses of neostigmine. In addition, we show that inhibition by a lower dose of neostigmine of the formalin-induced phasic pain did not prevent the subsequent occurrence of tonic pain produced by the irritant.
