The purpose of this study was to compare repetition performance and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) with 1-, 3-, or 5-minute rest intervals between sets of multi and single-joint resistance exercises. Fifteen resistance trained men (23.6 ± 2.64 years, 76.46 ± 7.53 kg, 177 ± 6.98 cm, bench press [BP] relative strength: 1.53 ± 0.25 kg·kg(-1) body mass) completed 12 sessions (4 exercises × 3 rest intervals), with each session involving 5 sets with 10 repetition maximum loads for the free weight BP, machine leg press (LP), machine chest fly (MCF), and machine leg extension (LE) exercises with 1-, 3-, 5-minute rest intervals between sets. The results indicated significantly greater BP repetitions with 3 or 5 minutes vs. 1 minute between sets (p ≤ 0.05); no significant difference was evident between the 3- and 5-minute rest conditions. For the other exercises (i.e., LP, MCF, and LE), significant differences were evident between all rest conditions (1 < 3 < 5; p ≤ 0.05). For all exercises, consistent declines in repetition performance (relative to the first set) were observed for all rest conditions, starting with the second set for the 1-minute condition and the third set for the 3- and 5-minute conditions. Furthermore, significant increases in RPE were evident over successive sets for both the multi and single-joint exercises, with significantly greater values for the 1-minute condition. In conclusion, both multi and single-joint exercises exhibited similar repetition performance patterns and RPE, independent of the rest interval length between sets.
OBJECTIVE:To analyze identify the level of noise at the workplace environment among Physical Education teachers during indoor bike classes and its association with some aspects of health. METHODS:Cross-sectional study carried out in 15 different gyms with 15 teachers in Rio de Janeiro (Southeastern Brazil) in 2007. A standardized questionnaire, tested in relation to its replication, was used in order to fi nd out the characteristics of the process and the way this job is organized, as well as complaints related to health reported by these teachers. The SRQ-20 (SelfReport Questionnaire) was utilized in order to verify the existence of minor psychiatric disturbances. The levels of sound pressure were measured by a portable appliance. The level of pressure was verifi ed in dB(A) at equivalent energy levels (Leq) in different places of the room at different moments during the class. ANOVA, chi-square and Pearson's correlation analyses were performed. RESULTS:The levels of sound pressure varied from 74.4 dB(A) to 101.6 dB(A). The results during the class were: a) warm-up (mean=88.45 dB(A)); b) main part (mean= 95.86 dB(A)); and, closure (mean= 85.12 dB(A)). The mean background noise was 66.89 dB(A)). There were signifi cant differences (p<0.001) among the background noise levels within different moments of the class. The noise was not related to minor psychiatric disturbances. CONCLUSIONS:Physical education professionals working with indoor bike classes are under high levels of sound pressure during their classes. This physical agent has been related to several health problems and should therefore be more controlled.
BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet radiation has been considered one of the most important risk factors for melanoma or nonmelanoma skin cancer. Thus, it has been accepted that professionals working with outdoor activities are at greater risk of developing skin cancer. OBJECTIVE: To identify sun-exposure habits among teachers of physical education (PE) who work with water activities. METHODS: We conducted an observational cross-sectional study with 123 male and female PE teachers aged between 20 and 58 years who have been working with water activities for at least a year using a questionnaire with open and closed-ended questions. RESULTS: Of the respondents, it was observed that 64.2% work directly exposed to the sun and 13.0% in partially covered pools; out of these, 69.5% do so between 10 am and 4 pm. In the group exposed to the sun, it was found that only 17.9% always protect themselves. Men seem to be less careful, since 14.3% always protect themselves, while 23.1% of the women reported to always protect themselves. However, there were no statistically significant differences. CONCLUSION: Based on the data collected, we conclude that the sample investigated may be at risk of developing skin cancer. Keywords: melanoma, skin cancer, workers. According to Azulay et al., 1 the most frequent types are basal cell carcinoma (70% of the diagnoses of skin cancer), which mainly affects adults older than 30 years of age; squamous cell carcinoma (20% of the cases), which is more frequent in males and in older adults; and those originating in the melanocytes (4% of the case...
In this article, the conjugate gradient method with adjoint problem is applied for the identification of the heat flux at the surface of ablating materials, by assuming no a priori information regarding the functional form of the unknown. Simulated measurements of the position of the ablating surface are used in the inverse analysis, together with simulated temperature measurements. The accuracy of the conjugate gradient method with adjoint problem is examined for functions containing sharp corners, by using different regularization approaches. Three different versions of the conjugate gradient method are compared, as applied to the inverse problem under observation.
Anthropometric measures of 1573 subjects of both sexes (male: n = 840; age 32.5 ± 8.9 years) were assessed at the beginning of the exercises program. The Average Monthly Frequency (AMF) was calculated based on access control, being computed only one access/day. We defined "regular" the individual staying in the gym for six months (or more) consecutive. The impact of the characteristics on regularity was determined by a multiple logistic regression model. Age and AMF were associated with high probability of regularity. Taking as reference individuals up to 25 years, within age between 26 and 45 showed higher chances to be regular (OR: 1.67, 95% CI 1.19 to 2.34, p= 0.003), as well as those above 45 years (OR: 3.28, 95% CI 1.99 to 5.42, p<0.001). AMF equal to or higher than eight days showed 50% of probability to be regular, regardless of age. It is concluded that individual characteristics can be selected for the detection of individuals that are more likely to abandon exercises programs and to prevent dropout.
