This study is aimed at revealing the types and functions of taboo words uttered by the characters in Alpha dog movie. This study is under the concern of sociolinguistics, which is a branch of linguistics studying language and its functions in society. It also employed a descriptive qualitative method using the researcher and a data sheet as the research instruments. The data of this study were the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences uttered by the characters of Alpha Dog movie and were collected by simak dan catat technique. The data then were analyzed by referential analysis technique. The data triangulations were also employed to confirm the validity of the data. This study reveals the type of taboo words uttered by the characters of Alpha dog movie can be classified into four; Epithet (EP), Profanity (PR), Vulgarity (VU), and Obscenity (OB). The functions of the words were classified into four; to draw attention to oneself (TDA), to show contempt (TSC), to be provocative (TBP) and to mock authority (TMA).
English is taught in Modern Islamic Boarding School as one of language competences must be mastered by the students beside Arabic. The teachers find difficulties to implement learning models that make the students to be active and the students need others learning variation. Research and Development (R & D) design is used in this research that aim to produce the development of “Project Based-Learning Model” plus VCD to improve the Students' English Ability of Modern Islamic Boarding School at Malang Area. The model of development is adopted by Borg and Gall Model starting from collecting information, development of initial product, 1st expert validation, 1st product revision, 2nd expert validation, 2nd product revision, tryout, and final product. The Experts’ English Material validation conclude that formulation of learning objective, content, material selection for development of “Project Based-Learning Model” have got category of Excellent. The validation of the Expert of Media conclude that final product of VCD have been appropriated with the aspects of learning media that are feasible to be applied.
The present study aims at exams the effectiveness of small group discusssion in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text of the tenth -grade students of SMA NEGERI 1 WOLOWAE. Teaching reading comprehension is recommended in Senior High School because reading comprehension is very important. In competence based on curriculum, students are understanding to comprehending the conten of the text. The research is carried out through quantitative research with an experimental method because the researcher gives treatment in teaching writing. In conducting the research, the researcher uses one group pre-test-post-test design. The researcher gave pre-test before treatment and post-test after treatment to get the data. In this research, the researcher took twenty students as a sample. The result of the study shows that the score of pre-test was 61 while the mean score of post-test was 81.5 and the mean score of differentiate was 20.5. On the other side, it was found that the result of t-score is bigger than t-table (9,71 > 2,11) at the significant level of 0,05. Therefore, based on the hypothesis testing, we can conclude that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the using small group discussion as a method is effective to increase students reading comprehension of the students’ of Senior High School, especially for the tenth grade of SMA NEGERI 1 WOLOWAE. Based on this findings, it is suggested, that the teacher should try to apply an interesting method.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of multicultural based learning with Multiple Perspectives Approach in suppressing intolerance among students. The result shows that there is a significant influence of multicultural learning models with multiple perspective approaches to students’ tolerance levels: 4.56 (control) and 6.28 (experimental). The tolerance level of students after applying multicultural based learning methods with multiple perspective approaches is better (X_A1n = 6.76) compared to the tolerance level of students using conventional learning methods (X_A2 = 4.11). The students’ four values emphasized on the implementation of multicultural based learning methods are increased.
Speaking is one of language skills which has to be mastered by the students. By being able to speak, students will be able to transfer their thought to others. Unfortunately, sometimes students, at SMP Islam Paramitha especially, failed to utter their idea in spoken manner due to several factors as lack of vocabulary, not knowing what and how to say the ideas, and mostly feeling unconfident. This problem cannot be neglected; therefore, the researcher decided to carry out a two-cycle Classroom Action Research (CAR). In This CAR the researcher implemented question and answer technique to improve students’ speaking ability on expressing their daily activities. By using observation sheets, interview guide, and test, it was found that 70% of the students had been successfully improving their speaking ability. As a result, the intended spoken communication, either between students and students or teacher and students, did take place.
The aim of the study is to reveal how multicultural based learning can increase the multicultural students' level of tolerance. The research is qualitative descriptive which the source of data is obtained from observation of the implementation of multicultural based learning in Speaking II class as well as interviews of students and lecturer. The result shows that the students' level of tolerance increases significantly after the implementation. there are four indicators which supports this claim; first based on the result of racial bias test taken by the students before and after the implementation, which the result shows significant improvement of score,; second, based on observations on every meeting focusing on four skills that become the emphasize of the study. Those skills are: multiculturalism skill, diversity skill, pluralism skill, and relativism skill. The students' four skills are increased after the implementation of the model. This research is intended to develop a web-based learning application “Mahir Berbahasa” to support the learning process of BIPA students at IKIP Budi Utomo. The software used in the development of this application is the Codeigniter and Bootstrap Framework. It is hoped that this application will become a student learning medium that can make it easier for foreign students to continue studying wherever they are. This type of research is R&D development research. The development model used is the development of Borg and Gall. The results of this research development product in the form of "Mahir Berbahasa" learning applications have been tested and have received good ratings from users and validators. The assessment includes aspects of visual appearance, aspects of media relevance, aspects of material organization, aspects of software engineering, aspects of effects for learning strategies, and aspects of language. From a value range of 1-5, the user gives a mean value of 4.72, while the validator gives a value of 4.52. Based on this assessment, this learning application is in the category of feasible to use.
The problem of urban waste is one of the most complicated problems in Indonesia's big cities. Utilizing municipal waste into co-firing fuel is one way to reduce waste that accumulates and reduce global emissions. Before being used, the urban waste needs to be tested for characteristics to determine its content or its combustion characteristics. This study uses Indonesian low-rank and medium-rank coal and Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) biomass. This observation aims to decide the effect of coal-SRF blended on slagging and fouling in cofiring using a drop tube furnace (DTF). The results obtained are SRF blending up to 15% there is no slag attached. There is slight slag attached at the blending ratio of 20% and 25%, and there is a corroded part of the plate. It can happen because SRF has a high chlorine content. Overall, it shows that co-firing coal with SRF up to 25% is still safe on slagging and fouling.
