Calotropis procera Ait. (Family Asclepiadaceae) is a species widely used for the treatment of various diseases including sickle cell disease in Burkina Faso. It enter in the composition of FACA ® , drug developed by Institute for Research in Health Sciences, Burkina Faso and used in the treatment of sickle cell disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects at short and long term of Calotropis procera root barks in some rodents. In the acute test, the limit test dose of 2000 mg/kg of aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts were administered orally to NMRI mice and then observed individually 2 h post-dosing and at least once daily for 14 days. Sub-chronic toxicity was evaluated after a daily oral administration of 20 mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract for 3 and 6 weeks to Wistar rats. Biochemical and hematological assessments as well as body and relative organ weights of the rats were carried out. The limit dose of 2000 mg/kg did not cause any mortality or signs of acute toxicity in the mice tested during the observation period. In the sub-chronic tests, the results did not show any treatment-related abnormalities in terms of physiological, hematological parameters. However, on biochemical parameters, a slight but not significant (p˃0.05) elevation of ALT and AST were noticed in treated groups. Our results suggest that aqueous extract of Calotropis procera which contains many chemical compounds is relatively safe when administered orally and contribute to the safe use of this part of plant in pharmaceutical formulations.

Notre travail a porté sur 992 cas d'affections mammaires colligés, de janvier 2001 à décembre 2006, dans les laboratoires d'anatomie pathologique de la ville de Ouagadougou. L'objectif a été de déterminer les aspects épi-démiologiques et histologiques des affections mammaires dans la ville de Ouagadougou. Il est ressorti de cette étude que : 1) les cas d'affections mammaires diagnostiqués ont augmenté avec le temps ; 2) les trois quarts des lésions diagnostiquées ont été bénignes ; 3) l'âge moyen des patients a été de 34,4 ans pour l'affection mammaire en général ; 4) chez l'homme, l'âge a été de 70 ans pour le seul cas de carcinome, et la moyenne d'âge lors du diagnostic de la lésion bénigne a été de 29 ans ; 5) la lésion a été le plus souvent localisée à droite avec 49,4 % des cas. Sur le plan de l'histologie, la première affection mammaire a été l'adéno-fibrome avec 37,2 % des cas, suivi du carcinome canalaire infiltrant (CCI) avec 16,8 % des cas. Le grade III de ScarffBloom-Richardson a été le plus souvent retrouvé avec 49,3 % des cas. La lésion fibrokystique a occupé le troisième rang avec 12,1 % des cas. La tuberculose mammaire a constitué une affection rare avec 0,4 % des cas d'affections mammaires. Chez l'homme, l'affection mammaire bénigne a été repré-sentée par la gynécomastie avec 0,6 % des cas d'affections mammaires. Un seul cas de tumeur maligne, à savoir le CCI bilatéral, a été diagnostiqué chez celui-ci. The main objective was to determine the histological and epidemiological aspects of breast disease in Ouagadougou. The following results were obtained. 1) The number of the cases has increased with the time.2) The three-quarters of diagnosed lesions were minor.3) The average age of patients was 34.4 years for breast disease in general. With regard to men, the age was 70 years for carcinoma, and the average age during the minor lesion diagnosis was 29 years. 4) The lesion was located mostly on the right side with 49.2% of the cases. 5) At the histological level, adenofibroma with 37.2% of the cases was considered as the highest occurrence followed by infiltrated canal carcinoma with 16.8% of the cases. The grade II by Scarff-BloomRichardson was found most of the time with 49.3% of the cases. 6) The fibrocystic lesion having 12.1% was ranked third. Breast tuberculosis was a rare disease with 0.4% of breast disease. 7) As far as men were concerned, the minor chest disease was shown by gynecomastia, representing 0.6% of breast disease cases. A single case of malignant tumor namely the bilateral infiltrating carcinoma canal was diagnosed.

Contexte : Les études sur les méningiomes rapportent des résultats variables à travers le monde. Différentes études trouvent les méningiomes, les gliomes ou les méta-stases comme la plus fréquente des tumeurs du système nerveux central (SNC). Notre travail a pour but d'étudier la place des méningiomes dans la morbidité liée aux tumeurs du SNC dans notre contexte. Matériel et méthode : Quatre-vingt-six cas de tumeurs du SNC, issus de l'unité de neurochirurgie du CHU-YO et diagnostiqués à l'histologie ont été rétrospectivement collectés de 2005 à 2011 à travers tous les laboratoires d'anatomie pathologique de Ouagadougou. Au cours de cette période, 198 cas de tumeurs du SNC diagnostiqués au scanner ont été répertoriés dans cette unité, seule prenant en charge les cas au Burkina. Résultats : Trente et un cas de méningiome ont été histologiquement diagnostiqués, et constituaient les tumeurs les plus fréquentes (36,04 %), suivis des gliomes (34,49 %), des métastases (7,33 %), puis des tumeurs hypophysaires (5,81 %). L'ensemble des 86 cas de tumeurs du SNC étaient constitués de 55,61 % d'hommes et 44,39 % de femmes ; l'âge moyen était de 37,05 ans. Les 31 cas de méningiome ont concerné 19 femmes (61,3 %) et 12 hommes (38,7 %), soit un sex-ratio hommes/femmes de 0,63. L'âge variait de 13 à 86 ans, avec une moyenne de 45,32 ans. Le sous-type histologique méningothélial était prédominant avec 35,48 % des cas. Les méningiomes de grade I (bénins) représentaient 90,31 %, et les méningiomes atypiques (grade II) et malins (grade III) 9,69 % des cas. Conclusion : Les méningiomes sont les tumeurs les plus fré-quentes du SNC dans notre contexte, avec prédominance du sous-type méningothélial de grade I. Different reports state meningiomas, gliomas, or metastatic tumors as the most common tumors among central nervous system neoplasms. The aim of our study was to determine the relative frequency of meningiomas among central nervous system neoplasms in our environment. Method: Consecutive patients (86) seen at Neurosurgery Office of Yalgado Ouédraogo Teaching Hospital of Ouagadougou, with histologically proven central nervous system tumor over a 7 years period (2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011), were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The commonest histological types were meningiomas, gliomas, metastasis, and pituitary tumors. Thirty-one patients (36.04%) had histologically confirmed meningioma during the study period, 25 (29.07%) had glioma, 6 (7.33%) had metastasis, and 5 (5.81%) had pituitary adenoma. The mean age of the 86 patients was 37.05 years, with 55.61% of male. The mean age of the meningiomas cases was 45.32, with 61.3% of female. 90.31% had grade I meningioma.

Traditional healers combine four medicinal plants (Cochlospermum tinctorium, Terminalia macroptera, Leptadenia hastata and Commiphora Africana to treat hepatitis in Burkina Faso. The aimed was to evaluate the hepato-curative activity of lyophilized aqueous decoction (LAD) and hydroethanolic macerate (LHM) of plant extracts on CCl4-induced hepatitis in rats. We assessed the acute toxicity and scavenging activity of the 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Hepato-curative activity study included nine groups with five rats each. We used rats as followed: group 1 as neutral controls, group 2 as negative controls, and the other groups were experimental groups. Rats in groups 2-9 received a single dose (1 mL/kg) of CCl4 in intraperitoneal injection to induce hepatitis. We fed orally the rats for seven consecutive days with sylimarin in group 3, LAD and LHM respectively in groups 4-6 and groups 7-9 by 400, 200 and 100 mg/kg/day. This study revealed LAD and LHM had a LD50> 2000 mg/kg and both showed radical-scavenging properties with IC50= 5.95 and 8.66 µg/mL respectively. All experimental rats regardless of the treatment group showed a significantly reduced plasma transaminases level as compared to negative controls. LAD and LHM at 400, 200 mg/kg significantly reduced alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transferase. Histologically, treated rats showed normal to almost normal liver in a dose-dependent manner as compared to the controls. Conclusion: LAD and LHM decreased liver enzyme and allowed a dose-Dependent liver damage recovery after CCl4-induced hepatitis in rats.

La présentation clinique et échographique initiale avait orienté le diagnostic vers une pathologie urinaire. L'apparition d'un syndrome occlusif et la mise en évidence à la tomodensitométrie (TDM) d'une invagination iléo-colique a permis de réaliser une hémicolectomie droite. L'examen anatomopathologique de la pièce opératoire a confirmé le diagnostic de lipome. Conclusion : Le lipome colique est rare. Sa symptomatologie est peu spécifique. La tomodensitométrie abdominale aide au diagnostic en mettant en évidence l'invagination et parfois la tumeur. L'exérèse chirurgicale suivie de l'examen anatomopathologique de la pièce opératoire permet de poser le diagnostic de lipome. Mots clés Lipome géant · Côlon · InvaginationAbstract The colic intussusception on lipoma is rare.Herein, we report the case of ileocolic intussusception in the right colic lipoma occurred in a 42-years-old woman. The clinical and ultrasonographic aspects directed towards an urinary pathology. The occurrence of an occlusive syndrome and ileocolic intussusception detected by computerized tomographic (CT) scan are consistent with a right hemicolectomy. Furthermore, pathological investigation confirmed the diagnosis of lipoma. Conclusion: Colonic lipoma is rare and its symptoms are not specific. Abdominal CT scan helps for the diagnosis by giving evidence for an intussusception and sometimes for a tumor. Surgical excision followed by pathological examination of the surgical specimen enables the diagnosis of lipoma.
