Objective: to learn about the social representation of nursing students about the sexuality of elders with dementia. Methods: qualitative study, based on the Theory of Social Representations, developed with 20 Nursing Graduation students from a Brazilian higher education institution. Data was collected through a focal group, processed in the software IRAMUTEQ and analyzed using a Descending Hierarchical Classification. Results: four semantic classes emerged: Sexuality as a right, The theme was insufficient in graduation, Meanings attributed to sexuality, and Care from the perspective of students. Conclusion: the study showed that the nursing students investigated had polysemic representations about the sexuality of elders with dementia, among which discriminatory and stigmatizing conceptions stood out, socially constructed and anchored in common sense.

Objective: to analyze how care is performed, understand the contributions of previous experience to professional practice in Long-Term Care Facilities for the Elderly (LTCFs), and recognize the challenges and propositions for professional training and the delivery of care in LTCFs. Method: an exploratory qualitative study was carried out in two stages with 33 professionals and managers of a long-term care facility in a municipality in the state of São Paulo. Analysis was performed using Collective Subject Discourse and Thematic Content Analysis (first and second stage, respectively). Results: It was found that, in the views of health professionals and managers, the quality of care is linked to basic needs and the training of professionals does not consider the specificities of gerontological care. They therefore reproduce a fragmented and mechanical work process. Conclusion: The results highlight the need to revisit courses in the area of health in order to understand their approach to training in elderly care.

Bibliometric analysis of scientific research about sexuality and dementia in the elderly

Map global scientific research on sexuality and dementia in the elderly to understand the focus and the growth of the area during the past decades. An exploratory study, descriptive and bibliometric with academic works on the database ISI Web of Knowledge/Web of ScienceTM. The following descriptors were used: “elder*”, “dementia*” and “sexuality*” in the time-based scratch between 1945 and 2018. The data analysis was performed with the aid of the software HistCiteTM. After applied the filters of refinement, there were identified 79 articles, published in 45 different journals indexed in the database in reference, written by 157 authors linked to 96 research institutions located in 19 countries. To achieve these articles there were used 2,312 references with an average of approximately 32 references per article. The international scientific production about sexuality and dementia in the elderly is scarce, and highlights the need for more specific studies on the theme and its potential for exploitation in future studies.
