Total amino acid requirements of weaned piglets 8 to 25 kg live weight given diets based on wheat and soya-bean meal fortified with free amino acids

Abstract: Two experiments were carried out with weaned piglets from 8 to 25 kg live weight in order to determine the dietary amino acid content necessary for maximum growth. Six diets based on wheat, soya-bean meal, soya-bean oil and free amino acids were compared in each experiment. Essential amino acids were in the same relative proportion for all diets: (methionine + cystine)/lysine = 0·60 to 0·65; threonine/lysine = 0·65; tryptophan/lysine = 0·19. The range of amino acid content was 9·53 to 12·52 g lysine per kg in … Show more

“…Assuming 85% as an average of ileal lysine digestibility, these recommendations are in the scope of presented requirement data for 100 g daily protein deposition. Our reported lysine requirement data for piglets are also in line with several other studies (Gatel et al, 1992;Whittemore et al, 2003;Wecke and Liebert, 2009). For feed formulation, Bertolo et al (2005) recommended 0.91% ileal digestible lysine (24.1 kg BW; 982 g daily feed intake), which are in line with our data (85% predicted ileal lysine digestibility) and several other studies (Martinez and Knabe, 1990;Coma et al, 1995).…”

“…The NRC (1998) dietary estimates for 5 to 10 kg pigs is approximately 1.35% total Lys or 1.19% standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys, with the range of research estimates reported in NRC (1998) varying widely from 1.10 to 1.40% total Lys. Results of other experiments have indicated that the requirement for total Lys for 5 to 10 kg pigs is between 1.45 and 1.49% (Gatel et al, 1992;Broekman et al, 1997). In a more recent report, Dean et al (2007) suggested that 1.40% SID Lys is required for optimal growth of 6 to 12 kg pigs.…”
