The present study investigated the occurrence of intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR) in newborn (n=40) and 150-day-old (n=240) pigs of different birthweight ranges (high, HW: 1.8-2.2kg; low, LW: 0.8-1.2kg) from higher-parity commercial sows and its impact on their subsequent development and carcass traits in a Brazilian commercial production system. HW newborn pigs had heavier organs than LW pigs (P<0.01), and all brain:organ weight ratios were higher (P<0.01) in LW compared with HW offspring, providing strong evidence of IUGR in the LW piglets. HW pigs had higher bodyweights and average daily gain (ADG) in all phases of production (P<0.05), but ADG in the finisher phase was similar in both groups. Additionally, LW newborn and 150-day-old pigs showed a lower percentage of muscle fibres and a higher percentage of connective tissue in the semitendinosus muscle, greater fibre number per mm(2) and a lower height of the duodenal mucosa (P<0.05). On the other hand, HW pigs had higher hot carcass weight, meat content in the carcass and yield of ham, shoulder and belly (P<0.01). Hence, lower-birthweight piglets may suffer from IUGR, which impairs their growth performance, muscle accretion, duodenal mucosa morphology and carcass traits.
Effect of ractopamine and the methods of diet formulation on the performance and carcass characteristics of finishing barrowsABSTRACT -An experiment was conduced with the objective of evaluating the effects of diet formulation methods and supplementation of ractopamine (RAC) on the performance and carcass characteristics of finishing barrows. Sixty commercial hybrid swines were used, distributed in a randomized experimental block design, in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangment, with two levels of RAC and three methods of diet formulation. Supplementation with RAC improved the final weight, daily weight gain (DWG) and feed conversion (FC) of the finishing barrows. Addition of RAC improved also the carcass characteristics by reducing the backfat thickness in point P 1 and increase daily lean meat deposition rate. Diets formulated based in the concept of ideal protein or by the increase of soybean meal provided better results on FC, but did not influence significantly daily feed intake, DWG and carcass characteristics. Finishing barrows supplemented with RAC during 21 or 28 days showed better performance and carcass quality. Diets formulated to attend the levels of digestible lysine by the inclusion of L-lysine HCL with the adjustment of other amino acids for ideal protein relation (ideal protein) or by the greater inclusion of soybean meal (increase of CP)provided better results of feed conversion in finishing borrows supplemented with RAC during 28 days.
3583kcal/kg, 85.2%, 90.8%, 85.7% and 69.3% for soybean meal; 4065kcal/kg, 83.6%, 86.1%, 81.9% and 81.5% for extruded semi-integral soybean; 3803kcal/kg, 75.2%, 73.9%, 74.4% and 80.4% for expanded integral soybean; 5272kcal/kg, 95.3%, 95.2%, 93.2% and 94.3%
Palavras-chave: carcaça, exigência, fase de crescimento, genótipo, proteína ideal Levels of Lysine for Gilts with High Genetic Potential for Lean Meat Deposition from 30 to 60 kg, Mantaining Constant the Relation of Lysine and Methionine+Cystine, Threonine, Tryptophan, Isoleucine and ValineABSTRACT -Forty crossbred gilts (Hampshire, Belgium Landrace, Pietran) with initial average weight of 30.1±1.25 kg and high genetic potential for lean meat deposition were used to evaluate different lysine levels. A randomized block experimental design, with four treatments, five replications and two animal per experimental unit, was used. The treatments corresponded to the basal diet with 17.5% crude protein, supplemented with L-lysine-HCl, resulting in diets with 1.00, 1.10, 1.20 and 1.30% of lysine. The diets were supplemented with increasing levels of threonine, methionine, isoleucine, valine and tryptophan, resulting in diets where the amino acids:lysine ratio was constant in 67, 52, 60, 68 and 19%, respectively, based on the true digestibility. There was no effect of treatments on feed intake, daily weight gain and blood serum urea concentration of animals, however, the animals seems to reach their maximum genetic potential for weight gain at lysine level of 1.10% (0.329%/Mcal de DE), corresponding to a lysine intake of 22 g/day. There was linear effect on daily lysine intake, that increased, and on ...
