Abstract: RESUMO. Show more

“…Also known as 'self', 'sense of self' and 'self-consciousness', refl exivity is the basis of the psychological phenomenon of self, that is, the conscious awareness of one's own conscience, even though aspects of pre-refl ective thought to play an important role in this process (Lysaker, 2006). From the perspective of semiotic phenomenology, the conscious experience of self can be understood as a communicative act (DeSouza & Gomes, 2005;Gomes, 1997), in other words, an act of dialogue that occurs between an addressee and himself/herself in a process that engenders own refl exivity (DeSouza, DaSilveira, & Gomes, 2008;DeSouza & Gomes, 2009). Accordingly, conscious experience of self, dialogue and refl exivity are different aspects of the same phenomenon defi ned in this study as dialogical refl exivity.…”

“…Regarding philosophy, the philosophical concepts about man that have emerged over time have infl uenced the comprehension of the self (Oliveira, 2006;Rasera, Guanaes, & Japur, 2004;Souza & Gomes, 2009). The ancient philosophers understood that the being was conceived at once, totally complete and perfect.…”

“…The dialogical self of Hermans emphasizes the idea that there is not a central position of the I, but multiple positions of the I that can be occupied by the same person and that assume a certain narrative necessity (Santos & Gomes, 2010). The dialogical self of Hermans, however, received severe criticism in the literature (Michel & Wortham, 2002;Richardson et al, 1998, Souza & Gomes, 2009. In general, the critics argue that the Hermans' dialogical self presents diffi culties in describing the infl uence of time and space on dialogic interaction, not offering an explanation for how the disagreement between divergent voices is resolved or harmonized.…”
