DNA barcoding of freshwater ichthyoplankton in the Neotropics as a tool for ecological monitoring

Abstract: Quantifying and classifying ichthyoplankton is one of the most effective ways of monitoring the recruitment process in fishes. However, correctly identifying the fish based on morphological characters is extremely difficult, especially in the early stages of development. We examined ichthyoplankton from tributaries and reservoirs along the middle stretch of the Paranapanema River, one of the areas most impacted by hydroelectric projects in the Neotropics. Matching DNA sequences of the COI gene (628-648 bp) all… Show more

“…Several genetic studies of partial mitochondrial and nuclear regions of P. maculatus have found a high degree of genetic diversity among populations (Garcia & Moreira Filho 2005;Paiva & Kalapothakis 2008;Carvalho et al 2011;Lundberg et al 2011;Pereira et al 2011;Ribolli et al 2012;Ferreira et al 2014;Frantine-Silva et al 2015). Here, we provide the first description of the complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence for P. maculatus, which could support the development of molecular markers studies to aid wildlife forensics, evolutionary approaches, and conservation and management studies.…”

“…; Frantine‐Silva et al . ). Investigation into global biodiversity has been stimulated alongside accumulation of DNA barcode data, with the BOLD system (http://www.barcodinglife.org) now having DNA barcodes for more than 250 279 species globally and 4 649 254 barcodes in total (as of January 2, 2016).…”
