Abstract: The present study is an update review on the occurrence and diagnosis of rickettsial diseases in Brazil and Portugal, aiming at promoting their epidemiological surveillance in both countries. A literature review was carried out and unpublished data of laboratories and surveillance systems were presented. “…In the present study, the seroprevalence of rickettsial antibodies in horses was 8.45% which is low compared to that reported (25 and 27.3%) in other studies in non-endemic areas of Brazil (LEMOS, 1996;HORTA et al, 2004;GALVÃO et al, 2005;CARDOSO et al, 2006;FREITAS, 2007;FREITAS et al, 2010). “…[3][4][5][6][7][8] Lyme disease-like syndrome is an emerging clinical entity that has been described in Brazil, and imitates the clinical manifestations of the classical Lyme disease from the northern hemisphere. However, no spirochetes have been identified in Brazilian patients and ticks, despite exhaustive use of molecular and microbiological assays on clinical samples.…”

“…In addition to improved conclusion of fatal cases, this high case-fatality rate in the State of Minas Gerais may also reflect health workers' difficulty in suspecting BSF. As suggested previously 15,16 , other more common diseases like dengue and other febrile exanthematic diseases show similar clinical characteristics and can cause confusion in the differential diagnosis. For the vast majority of these diseases, the recommended treatment does not require the use of antibiotics, or when it does, the antibiotics are not effective for treating BSF.…”
