Reference Values of Skin Autofluorescence

Abstract: The present results provide reference values of skin AF for healthy Caucasian control subjects over a broad age range. A major contribution of age and some interaction of smoking and gender were observed, resulting in reference values of skin AF suitable for clinical settings and future studies.

“…Because of these special fluorescent characteristics their accumulation on skin collagen can be estimated noninvasively using a skin autofluorescence (AFR) reader, also called an AGE reader [11]. Recent evidence has shown that AFR increases with age and is increased in patients with diabetes [12][13][14]. In COPD, it has been shown that CML is increased in epithelial lining fluid from peripheral airways as compared to healthy ex-and current smokers [15].…”

“…AF was lower in non-smokers than in smokers [11]. In persons with low skin reflectance (<10%), skin AF was dependent on skin colour, but was still related to age [12,13]. In our group, we did not find any connection of AGEs with smoking and also with age.…”

“…Egészséges kaukázusi típusú kontrollszemélyekben mér-ve a SAF értéke az életkorral, kisebb mértékben a dohányzással mutatott összefüggést, a nemek között is találtak eltérést [33]. Erősebben pigmentált bőrű betegcsoportban a SAF értékei alacsonyabbak, kevésbé jelzik a diabeteses szövődményeket [34].…”
