Provider Training to Screen and Initiate Evidence-Based Pediatric Obesity Treatment in Routine Practice Settings: A Randomized Pilot Trial

Abstract: Introduction This randomized pilot trial evaluated two training modalities for first-line, evidence-based pediatric obesity services (screening and goal-setting) among nursing students. Method Participants (N=63) were randomized to Live Interactive Training (Live) or Web-facilitated Self-study Training (Web). Pre-training, post-training, and one-month follow-up assessments evaluated training feasibility, acceptability, and impact (knowledge, and skill via simulation). Moderator (previous experience) and pred… Show more

“…ID refers to a significant overall impairment of intellectual functioning acquired during childhood (Kolko et al, 2017;Gressier et al, 2016). Estimates of the prevalence of ID derived from epidemiological studies vary considerably, with pooled estimates for children suggesting a point prevalence of 1.83% (95% CI confidence intervals of 1.52 to 2.14%) (Gressier et al, 2016).…”

“…For instance, monitoring, positive reinforcement, goal setting, and parenting approaches may be discussed in the context of youth with disabilities and may be helpful for addressing weight management in this population. In addition, given that training approaches are efficacious in live (i.e., in-person) and web-based approaches (Kolko et al, 2017), incorporating technology may increase the reach and scalability of training, and offers trainees cost-effective opportunities to review and re-engage with training materials (Miller, Sorensen, Selzer, & Brigham, 2006; Sholomskas et al, 2005). …”

“…Recent efforts with nursing students indicate that brief training can enhance their knowledge and skill in delivering screening and initial intervention for obesity among youth and families (Kolko et al, 2017). Given that nurses receive limited training in addressing behaviors among youth with disabilities, this could be incorporated into obesity-related education for nurses.…”
