Prognostic Value of the Tumour-Infiltrating Dendritic Cells in Colorectal Cancer: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Dendritic cells (DCs) either boost the immune system (enhancing immunity) or dampen it (leading to tolerance). This dual effect explains their vital role in cancer development and progression. DCs have been tested as a predictor of outcomes for cancer progression. Eight studies evaluated tumour-infi ltrating DCs (TIDCs) as a predictor for colorectal cancer (CRC) outcomes. The detection of TIDCs has not kept pace with the increased knowledge about the identifi cation of DC subsets and their maturation status. F… Show more

“…Various antibodies (detecting S100, CD1a, ATPase, CD83, CD207 and CD208) and measurement methods have been used to investigate the infiltration of DCs into cancer tissue, especially skin and oral carcinomas [12] , [13] , [14] . Infiltration of DCs has also been studied in carcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract such as colorectal [18] and gastric [19] , [20] , [21] cancers. To the best of our knowledge, only two studies have evaluated DC infiltration into GBC.…”

“…Recently it has been shown that resveratrol trihydroxy trans stilbene (TS) is able to hamper the suppressive ability of Treg by increasing CXCR3 in CD8+ Tregs facilitating Teff recruitment with a reduction of number and size of tumors (82). Dendritic cells (DCs) play a relevant role in cancer by exerting both pro-tumorigenic and anti-tumorigenic functions depending on the local environment (83) having an impact upon clinical outcome in CRC patients (84). Furthermore, Kajihara et al analyzed the potential role of a dendritic-based cancer immunotherapy treatment in patients with recurrent or metastatic CRC (85).…”

“…In ltrating myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) are good predictors of tumor prognosis. By regulating immunosuppressive factors in the tumor microenvironment or targeting the genes regulating DCs maturation, mDCs can effectively promote maturation and activate the immune response with increased e ciency (8). DCs play a key role in tumor immunotherapy, and relevant research is ongoing.…”
