Prognostic Value of Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen Indexin Gastric Stromal Tumors:Correlation With Mitotic Count and Clinical Outcome

Abstract: Morphologic studies of gastric stromal tumors (GSTs) indicate that mitotic counts (MCs) and tumor size are major discriminants predictive of biologic behavior. The authors evaluated the tumor proliferation of GSTs with anti-proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA; DAKO clone PC10, DAKO Corporation, Carpinteria, CA) for correlation with MCs, histologic cell type, and clinical outcome. Fifty-eight tumors ranging from 1.5 to 45 cm in size were selected for clinicopathologic assessment. Mitotic activity was count… Show more

“…Eighteen tumors had more than 10 cm in maximal diameter that is alone one of the main prognostic factor (9,15) . Almost half of the tumors had also more than 5 mitoses/per HPF that is also a factor of worst prognosis (2,28,29) . The literature articles related that up to 20% of GISTs tumors had a high malignant potential (10,28) , however in this study this potential arise to 80%.…”

“…The biological potential (2,10,28,29) was determined by the tumor size and the mitotic index (Table 1). Tumor size was recorded as the largest diameter in any dimension of the primary tumor and was stratified as ≀5 cm, 5 to 10 cm or >10 cm.…”

“…However, if an adequate sample can be obtained, it is possible to count mitotic figures, the most significant indicator of biologic behavior [33,34]. By using the EUS-FNA technique, adequate specimens are usually obtained for histology and differential immunophenotyping of GISTs.…”
