The ongoing debate on the boon or bane of monocultural timber plantations demonstrates the need to develop alternative approaches that achieve forest productivity while conserving biodiversity. We assessed the diversity of tree species in native forests and in Eucalyptus plantations, and evaluated the potential use of native species to enhance plantation management. For this purpose, we established one-hectare permanent plots in nine native forests (riverine and park forests) and nine Eucalyptus plantations in the northwestern part of Uruguay. Forest inventories were carried out on 200 m2 plots and regeneration was assessed along transects in 9 m2 subplots. Riverine forests have the highest Shannon diversity index (2.5) followed by park forests (2.1) and Eucalyptus plantations (1.3). Tree density was high in riverine forests (1913/ha) and plantations (1315/ha), whereas park forests have lower tree density (796/ha). Regeneration density was high in riverine forests (39136/ha) and park forests (7500/ha); however, native species can regenerate in the understory of plantations (727/ha), and this underlines the possibility of developing a mixed species approach to reduce the negative impact of monocultures. Differences in the composition of plant communities were denoted between native forests and plantations, although native forests were similar in composition, even in the presence of exotic species. Native forests harbor specialist species that are absent from plantations, and therefore perform a decisive role in maintaining local biodiversity. Strategies to enhance species diversity and structural diversity within plantations or to establish mixed buffer strips containing native species at the edge of plantations are potential measures to enhance biodiversity and foster the integration of plantations into the local landscape.

The cambui tree (Myrciaria floribunda (West ex Willd) O. Berg), is a native fruit tree from Brazil, whose fruit present potential in natura and industrial consumption. Our objective was to evaluate the genetic diversity between individuals differentiated by fruit color -orange and purple, by using ISSR molecular markers. The plant material belongs to the Caju Private Natural Heritage Reserve, experimental field of Embrapa Coastal Tablelands, in the municipality of Itaporanga d'Ajuda, SE. Young leaves from 25 individuals (15 with orange color fruit and 10 with purple color fruits) were collected for DNA extraction and PCR-ISSR analysis with 15 primers, which produced a total of 93 bands, being 95.5% of them polymorphic. The mean similarity was 0.53, based on the Jaccard coefficient. The least similar individuals were FR5 and FL8; FR5 and FL9; FR1 and FR5. The most similar pairs of individuals were FL3 and FL4; FL4 and FL5. The UPGMA analysis clustered the individuals into two groups. Although no specific molecular marking that characterizes fruit coloration has been found, there is genetic variability among the evaluated individuals. Berg), é uma frutífera nativa do Brasil, cujos frutos apresentam potencial para consumo in natura e industrial. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a diversidade genética entre indivíduos diferenciados pela coloração dos frutos -laranja e roxa, utilizando marcadores moleculares ISSR. O material vegetal pertence a Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural do Caju, campo experimental da Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros, no município de Itaporanga d'Ajuda, SE. Folhas jovens de 25 indivíduos (15 com frutos de cor laranja e 10 com frutos de cor roxa) foram coletadas para extração de DNA e análise PCR-ISSR com 15 primers, os quais produziram um total de 93 bandas, sendo 95,5% polimórficas. A similaridade média foi de 0,53, com base no coeficiente de Jaccard. Os indivíduos menos semelhantes foram FR5 e FL8; FR5 e FL9; FR1 e FR5. Os pares de indivíduos mais similares foram FL3 e FL4; FL4 e FL5. A análise UPGMA agrupou os indivíduos em dois grupos. Apesar de não ter sido encontrada uma marca molecular específica que caracterize a coloração dos frutos, há variabilidade genética entre os indivíduos avaliados. ResumoMyrceugenia euosma (O. Berg) D. Legrand (Myrtaceae) tem porte arbóreo ou arbustivo, com ocorrência na América do Sul, principalmente no Chile e no sul do Brasil. Objetivou-se estudar a morfologia de fruto, semente e plântula, e a germinação de sementes desta espécie. Os frutos foram coletados de cinco matrizes em remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Aluvial em Araucária -PR. Foi testada a influência de diferentes substratos (papel, rolo de papel e areia), temperaturas (20 ºC, 25 ºC e 30 ºC) e condições de luz (presença e ausência) sobre a germinação das sementes. M. euosma tem fruto do tipo baga, contendo de 2 a 13 sementes, envolvidas por tegumento membranáceo, com endosperma mucilaginoso, evidente apenas na germinação. O embrião é mircióide, típico da subtribo Myrciinae, e a plântula é epígea, fanerocotiledonar. A germinação tem início entre três e cinco dias e, com exceção do substrato rolo de papel na temperatura 30ºC, os demais tratamentos apresentaram percentuais relativamente altos de germinação (≈ 72%). As sementes são fotoblásticas neutras. Os resultados indicam que M. euosma tem poucas restrições em termos reprodutivos quanto à germinação. Legrand (Myrtaceae). Myrceugenia euosma is a tree or shruby species that occurs in South America in two major centers: Chile and south of Brazil. The objective of this work was to study the morphology of the fruit, seed and seedling and the seed germination of this species. Fruit, seed and seedling were illustrated and described. The influence of three substrates (paper towels, paper roll and sand), temperatures (20 ºC, 25 ºC and 30 ºC) and conditions of light (presence and absence) over the seed germination were evaluated. The fruit of M. euosma is a berry, containing 2 to 13 seeds. The seed has membranaceous tegument, small amount of mucilaginous endosperm, evident only in germination, and embryo typical of the subtribe Myrciinae. The seedling is epigea, phanerocotylar, with paracotyledons and eophylls simple, opposites. Germination started three to five days after the test installation. Almost all treatments resulted in relatively high germination percentage (≈72%), except in paper roll at 30ºC (43%). The species germinates in the absence of light. The results indicate that M. euosma has few reproductive restrictions with regard to germination.
