Neste estudo, as folhas de nove espécies foram comparadas anatomicamente: Piper aduncum Vell.; P. cernuum Vell.; P. dilatatum Rich; P. gaudichaudianum Kunth; P. glabratum Kunth; P. hispidinervum C. DC.; P. lindbergii C. DC.; P. solmsianum C. DC. e P. umbellatum Jacq. AbstractThe species of Piper are of great medical interest. They, however, represent considerable taxonomic challenge, probably due to the small size of floral parts. Therefore, the external morphology of the leaf has been used as diagnostic features in the taxonomy of the group. However, there are few anatomical studies on species of this genus. In this study, the leaves of nine species were compared anatomically: Piper aduncum Vell., P. cernuum Vell., P. dilatatum Rich, P. gaudichaudianum Kunth, P. glabratum Kunth, P. hispidinervum C. DC., P. lindbergii C. DC., P. solmsianum C. DC. and P. umbellatum Jacq. The objective was to evaluate the potential of anatomical characters for species separation. Most species studied have the epidermis of the lamina consists of rectangular and rounded cells. Subepidermal layers occur on both sides of the lamina, except in P. aduncum, P. cernuum and P. hispidinervum. All species are hypostomatic, except P.hispidinervum. The mesophyll is dorsiventral in most species, while in P. solmsianum and P. umbellatum, the mesophyll is homogeneous. The number of layers of palisade and spongy tissue is variable. Also there are variations in the number and size of vascular bundles. In general, secreting cells, idioblasts, and glandular trichomes, lipids, phenolic compounds and starch are present. Cluster analysis identified three distinct groups of species based on anatomical features studied.
AbstractMorphology of diaspore and seedling of tree species of the Araucaria forest (Subtropical Ombrophilous Forest) in southern Brazil. This study characterized morphologically the fruits, seeds and seedlings of species of Araucaria Forest, aiming to understand the strategies of establishing different successional groups. Therefore, fruits of 18 tree species were collected in Curitiba, Paraná. Then the seeds were sown in vermiculite and remained in the laboratory until the seedling stage. The pioneer species have predominantly dehiscent dry fruits, unalbuminous seeds, small structures that favor anemochoric dispersal and seedlings with thin cotyledons, foliaceous with trichomes. In late secondary species the fruits are fleshy with zoochorous dispersal, seeds are albuminous and seedlings present fleshy cotyledons, foliaceous, and in some cases also reserve function. In the early secondary species, the characteristics are variable. Morphological characterization allows the interpretation of functional ecology, the different strategies of establishment of species. Keywords: Succession groups; establishment; functional morphology; Mixed Ombrophilous Forest.
Legrand (Myrtaceae). Myrceugenia euosma is a tree or shruby species that occurs in South America in two major centers: Chile and south of Brazil. The objective of this work was to study the morphology of the fruit, seed and seedling and the seed germination of this species. Fruit, seed and seedling were illustrated and described. The influence of three substrates (paper towels, paper roll and sand), temperatures (20 ºC, 25 ºC and 30 ºC) and conditions of light (presence and absence) over the seed germination were evaluated. The fruit of M. euosma is a berry, containing 2 to 13 seeds. The seed has membranaceous tegument, small amount of mucilaginous endosperm, evident only in germination, and embryo typical of the subtribe Myrciinae. The seedling is epigea, phanerocotylar, with paracotyledons and eophylls simple, opposites. Germination started three to five days after the test installation. Almost all treatments resulted in relatively high germination percentage (≈72%), except in paper roll at 30ºC (43%). The species germinates in the absence of light. The results indicate that M. euosma has few reproductive restrictions with regard to germination.
SEED moRPhologY AND gERmINAtIoN oF Curitiba prismatica (D. legrand) Salywon & landrumABStRACt -this study aimed to characterize the seed, and seedling morphology and development of C. prismatica and to identify the best temperature, substrate and light conditions for germination. the seed is characterized as exalbuminous and has a spiral, elliptical shape, with a coriaceous, dark-brown tegument. the embryo is described as cotyledonary pimentoid, axial, meaty and cylindrical, curved into a "C" and is white. Seedling development begins with the operculum opening and a small expansion of hypocotyl in this region. After this expansion, hairs develop at the base of the hypocotyl and the emission of the radicle occurs around the 18 th day, and by 45 days the seedling has already developed the protophyll. the highest values for percentage, mean time and germination speed of C. prismatica seeds were obtained at 25°C, using a paper towel substrate and sand. The species can be classified as being preferentially positively photoblastic.
Possui arilo carnoso e alaranjado, e endosperma carnoso. O embrião é espatulado, verde-claro, com eixo curto e paracotilédones cordiformes. A plântula é do tipo epígea e fanerocotiledonar. No epicótilo ocorrem pequenas estípulas axiais.
Moldenke (Lamiaceae)).Vitex Megapotamica (tarumã) is a deciduous tree occurring in Brazil from Minas Gerais to Rio Grande do Sul States. In order to characterize fruit and seed morphology and morpho-anatomy of seedlings, fruits of this species were collected and seeds were germinated in the laboratory. Seedlings were collected from root protrusion to development of the first pair of eophylls. The fruits were measured and weighed and the number of seeds per fruit counted. Fruit and seed morphology were described and illustrated, as well as morphoanatomy of the seedling. The fruit is a 4-locular drupe containing only one or two seeds with a thin layer of endosperm and an axial, foliate embryo. The woody endocarp seems to restrict germination in this species. The seedling has epigeal, phanerocotylar development; elliptical paracotyledons with entire margins, and opposite, simple, elliptical eophylls with serrate margins, and simple multicelullar trichomes. Paracotyledons and eophylls have heterogeneous dorsiventral mesophyll, collateral bundle, and anomocytic stomata. The root is polyarc, with parenchymatous cortex; the hypocotyl has glandular and non-glandular trichomes, a distinc...
The objective of this study was to analyze the morphofunctional attributes of Mixed Ombrophyllous Forest species of different successional categories. Fruits were collected from forest remnants in Curitiba, Paraná. It was analyzed the biometrics of seeds and seedlings of all species and the following ratios were estimated: shoot/seedling length, shoot/seedling mass, cotyledons/seedling mass, eophyll/seedling mass and seedling/ seed mass. Statistical differences among sucessional groups were observed in many of the evaluated traits. The variability among species is mainly explained by seedling size, tissue investment for light interception and shoot resource allocation. Late secondary species have larger seedlings with characteristics that indicate slower initial development, dependent on seed reserves. The pioneers species have smaller seedlings but faster development and earlier dependence on photosynthesis. These morphological and functional differences can result in different strategies for the establishment of seedlings in the successional process. The cluster analysis results on formation of two major groups. The first group is comprised of the late secondary species. The second group includes two distinct subgroups that separate the pioneers, and most of the early secondary species. These results indicate that the number and quality of available data should be considered in the definition of successional categories adopted in ecological studies.
