Municipal Solid Waste Management Practices and Opportunities in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Municipal solid waste management has been given serious attention by the authorities of Saudi Arabia (SA). This study focuses on municipal solid waste (MSW) that predominantly contains food, paper, and plastic waste. However, improper handling of MSW causes several environmental and human health issues. Therefore, it is necessary to review the current practices and future opportunities that have been adopted for solid waste collection, handling, and disposal. Considering the current scenario, this study propos… Show more

“…The recent advances in treating MSW have been documented, which has helped put those countries in a better position for treating MSWM (Asase et al, 2009;Radwan and Mangi, 2019;Zand, 2020;Zhang, 2010). There are specialised programs in place for proper treatment and disposal of MSW.…”

“…Also, unique safety measures and the need to ensure information security can present a trial, given the opportunity, human expense, and commercial impact of COVID-19, such investigation should proceed with zeal 7 . The cities of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia do not have this type of information 24 . There are several active case studies on the involvement of the local and private sectors in the management of solid waste in developing countries.…”

“…In many countries such as France, Sweden, Denmark, and Taiwan, Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) for energy recovery represents the most common waste management technology [1]. The incineration reduces the mass and volume of the solid waste dramatically, thus the requirement for landfilling is decreased [2][3][4][5][6][7]. However, there is still a considerable amount of solid incineration residue, generated after the combustion, typically bottom ash, fly ash, boiler ash, etc.…”
