In this paper, a model for Cr (VI) removal and optimization was made using a novel aerogel material, chitosan-resole CS/R aerogel, where a freeze-drying and final thermal treatment was employed to fabricate the aerogel. This processing ensures a network structure and stability for the CS, despite the non-uniform ice growth promoted by this process. Morphological analysis indicated a successful aerogel elaboration process., FTIR spectroscopy corroborated the aerogel precursor’s identity and ascertained chemical bonding after adsorption. Owing to the variability of formulations, the adsorption capacity was modeled and optimized using computational techniques. The response surface methodology (RSM), based on the Box–Behnken design using three levels, was used to calculate the best control parameters for the CS/R aerogel: the concentration at %vol (50–90%), the initial concentration of Cr (VI) (25–100 mg/L), and adsorption time (0.3–4 h). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and 3D graphs reveal that the CS/R aerogel concentration and adsorption time are the main parameters that influence the initial concentration of CS/R aerogel metal-ion uptake. The developed model successfully describes the process with a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.96 for the RSM. The model obtained was optimized to find the best material design proposal for Cr (VI) removal. Numerical optimization was used and showed superior Cr (VI) removal (94.4%) under conditions of a CS/R aerogel concentration of 87/13 %vol, with an initial concentration of Cr (VI) of 31 mg/L, and an adsorption time of 3.02 h. These results suggest that the proposed computational model can obtain an effective and viable model for CS material processing and for optimization of the uptake of this metal.

Smart Waste Management and Classification Systems Using Cutting Edge Approach

With a rapid increase in population, many problems arise in relation to waste dumps. These emits hazardous gases, which have negative effects on human health. The main issue is the domestic solid waste collection, management, and classification. According to studies, in America, nearly 75% of waste can be recycled, but there is a lack of a proper real-time waste-segregating mechanism, due to which only 30% of waste is being recycled at present. To maintain a clean and green environment, we need a smart waste management and classification system. To tackle the above-highlighted issue, we propose a real-time smart waste management and classification mechanism using a cutting-edge approach (SWMACM-CA). It uses the Internet of Things (IoT), deep learning (DL), and cutting-edge techniques to classify and segregate waste items in a dump area. Moreover, we propose a waste grid segmentation mechanism, which maps the pile at the waste yard into grid-like segments. A camera captures the waste yard image and sends it to an edge node to create a waste grid. The grid cell image segments act as a test image for trained deep learning, which can make a particular waste item prediction. The deep-learning algorithm used for this specific project is Visual Geometry Group with 16 layers (VGG16). The model is trained on a cloud server deployed at the edge node to minimize overall latency. By adopting hybrid and decentralized computing models, we can reduce the delay factor and efficiently use computational resources. The overall accuracy of the trained algorithm is over 90%, which is quite effective. Therefore, our proposed (SWMACM-CA) system provides more accurate results than existing state-of-the-art solutions, which is the core objective of this work.

In recent decades, most of construction activities have been taking place in developing countries such as the Middle East and North Africa region. The expansion in infrastructure has great impact in the technological, social, economic and environmental transformation of this region. Construction sector contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) varies throughout the region and ranges between 2-10%. Currently, sustainable construction requires integrated and comprehensive sustainable design including careful choice of materials and methods. Materials that are locally available and require less energy to produce and transport would pave the way to more sustainable practices. Many countries in the region have realised the benefits of using local building materials on the economy, society and environment. This paper outlines the key trends and opportunities of using sustainable and affordable local building materials in the region to respond to the global climate change crisis and to promote more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The current practice of using various building materials such as bio-based materials, treated municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSWI-BA), construction and demolition waste, gypsum-containing by-products (phosphorgypsum, FGD gypsum, borogypsum and others) and rammed earth will be reviewed. It is concluded that the use of these local building materials in construction activities would foster the development of the society. However, some of these materials are already developed and reached the implementation stage while most of them are still at R&D stage. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive local and regional strategies to enhance the utilization of these materials.
