The purpose of this study was to monitor population fluctuations of various species of Diptera during the growing season of durum wheat, in years 2009 and 2010. The most abundant Hymenoptera species was also included in the study as a control species. The species studied were Cephus pygmaeus, Haplodiplosis marginata, Mayetiola destructor, and Chlorops pumilionis. Samplings of insects were taken in eight periods to cover the late stages of durum wheat. Measurements were made every about 100 m in the field, with five wheat plants per sample, from 10 different places. Total insect individuals on each wheat plant were counted. Maximum number of individuals per plant reached 6-7 insects, except for C. pumilionis which showed only 3-5 individuals. Year X sampling period interaction was also found in some cases, indicating different populations' fluctuations across years. The relatively low populations found in our study may indicate low level of danger on crop production, but the unstable populations of the most multitudinous insect species H. marginata and C. pygmaeus may cover a possible danger, especially for species H. marginata which, in specific years, can be found in great numbers causing severe damages on wheat crops. Combination of pests may result in significant damages and a total recording procedure must be practiced.

Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock) known as San Jose scale is one of the most destructive apple pests in the world. San Jose scale damage all parts of the apple crop throughout the year. The research was conducted to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of High-Pressure Water (HPW) to manage San Jose scale and the impact on non-target arthropods of apple crop. The observation of San Jose scale population at 24 plants was conducted every day. The observation of non-target arthropods was done visually with a radius of 1.5 meters, then identified up to family level. In addition, it was observed the effect of HPW to the apple crop by observing morphological and physiological changes of the stems on apple crop. The result showed the combination of HPW to the population of San Jose scale significantly different from controls (Pesticide application). Initial population of San Jose scale before application were 100-200 individuals, after application became 0-10 individuals, whereas the control population remained higher. Non target arthropods diversities increased after the application of HPW. Non target arthropods were consisted of 17% pests, 38% detrivor, 23% pollinators, 4% parasitoids, and 18% predators. High Pressure Water did not have negative effect on apple crop.

Insect pests have major effects on agricultural production and food supply. Pest control in conventional crop management in orchards is mainly based on agrochemicals, which entails economic, health and environmental costs. Other approaches, such as biological methods or products based on biologically active substances and sex pheromones used for mating disruption, have faced some implementation challenges, particularly in relation to invasive insect species. The key for appropriate insect pest management is to identify the species and understand its biology and behaviour. Pest management systems should monitor, detect and inform fruit growers about changes in insect distribution, population ecology, possible damage level and economic loses. Comstockaspis perniciosa (San José scale—SJS) is a model example of a pest against which the method of integrated pest management should be adopted. This review presents a case study to support this statement.
