Mean Platelet Volume in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Context:diabetes mellitus is a global pandemic. The increased platelet activity may play a role in the development of vascular complications of this metabolic disorder. The mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of the average size and activity of platelets. Larger platelets are younger and exhibit more activity.Aims:to determine the MPV in diabetics compared to nondiabetics, to see if there is a difference in MPV between diabetics with and without vascular complications, and to determine the correlation o… Show more

“…HbA1c increases with poor glycemic control. Other studies have patients distribution on the basis of HbA1c where Gresesle et al (2003), Farah Jabeen et al (2013) and Kodiatte et al (2012). 1,25,26 However, these authors compared only two groups i.e control and diabetic and therefore there finding were limited as compared to a study which includes pre diabetic patients (I.F.G).…”

“…Study done by Kodiatte TA et al showed the similar finding that in diabetes mellitus mean platelet volume (MPV) is increased and had a positive correlation with HbA1c Ulutas KT et al (2014). 1,27 In this study, all diabetic patients were divided into two groups according to their HbA1c levels: group A consisted of patients with HbA1c levels ≤7% and group B consisted of patients with HbA1c levels >7%. Concluding that MPV was significantly higher in Group B as compared to both nondiabetics and Group A. MPV had a high positive correlation with HbA1c and FSG, as with diabetes duration.…”

“…Therefore higher MPV increases the chance of vascular complications. 12,13 Previous studies disclosed that MPV was linked with coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, peripheral artery disease, and cerebral ischemia. [5][6][7][8] Several studies have showed that there were aggregates of thyrombocytes in retinal capillaries of diabetic rats.…”

“…Its deficiency is associated with rickets in children (15). In previous studies were reported that vitamin D deficiency is associated with several pathological conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and DM although all mechanisms are not fully understood (10,14). In a few studies carried out on adults healthy groups were announced that its deficiency may lead to immunological disorders, inflammation and increases in the level of various proinflammatory cytokines, so that vitamin D deficiency may cause increased MPV through increasing cytokines and adhesion molecules (16,17) Consequently, we aimed to evaluate whether there is any correlation between some PLT indices and vitamin D in children of age 0-18 since there has not been any study investigated this issue in childhood until today.…”
