A study to find correlation of platelet indices with HbA1c in diabetic patients with absence/presence of vascular complications

Abstract: Background: Diabetes Mellitus is a global pandemic disease. The increased platelet activity is emphasized to play a role in the development of vascular complications of the metabolic disorder. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of average size and activity of platelets. This study was conducted to find correlation of platelet indices with HbA1c in diabetic patients with absence/presence of vascular complications. Methods: Total of 100 subjects was enrolled in the study. Sample for glucose estimation and… Show more

“…In the present study, the platelet distribution width (PDW) was signi cantly higher in diabetics subjects when compared to controls, similar results was seen with the study conducted by Dindar et al [13] The difference between PDW of group A and group B was insigni cant which was similar to studies conducted by Dubey I et al and Shilpi K et al, but in discordance with other studies. [1,10,11,14] In addition, P-LCR was also found to be higher in diabetics when compared to control subjects similar to other studies. [1,12] However, in the present study the difference of P-LCR between group A and group B was insigni cant which was in accordance with other studies but in discordance with some studies.…”

“…In addition to that, platelet count is a significant clinical variable used in markers of liver fibrosis such as the fibrosis 4 (FIB4) index [17] in the field of diabetes care, because patients with T2DM had been known to have a high prevalence of fatty liver disease, which spans a wide spectrum from simple steatosis to cirrhosis [18]. Therefore, the use of platelet indices, including platelet count, has recently attracted attention for patients with T2DM [19,20].…”

“…15 Hematological indices such as mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet count (PLT count) and white blood cell subtypes are among the inflammatory markers considered reliable prognostic indicators for diabetes complications. 16,17 Coronary artery disease risk is significantly associated with higher and lower triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), respectively, 18 alongside the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), log TG/HDL-C), which is a surrogate estimate of the atherogenic dyslipidemia among T2DM patients. 19 The risk of coronary heart diseases in diabetic patients could be greatly estimated using adiposity markers such as the conicity index (C-index), body adiposity index (BAI) and waist-height ratio (WHtR).…”
