Key Issues in Local Job Accessibility Measurement: Different Models Mean Different Results

Abstract: This methodological paper shows that using different local job accessibility models (LJA) lead to significantly different empirical appreciations of job accessibility. Matching several exhaustive micro data sources on the Paris region municipalities, we benchmark a representative set of LJA measurement models used in recent literature and an original model where i) we fully estimate job availability according to a set of individual characteristics, ii) we fully model job competition on the local labour market … Show more

“…Since public and private transport are clearly alternative ways of reaching job opportunities, we expect families residing in areas served by better public transport infrastructure to be, on average, less dependent on private transport. Offering a first impression of this relationship, Figure 3 shows 12 As suggested by Bunel and Tovar (2013), the use of alternative measures of job accessibility might lead to different results. Therefore, we checked the sensitivity of our results obtained under different definitions of job accessibility by public transport.…”

“…Boisjoly and El-Geneidy (2016), using public transport share regression models, analysed the influence of time sensitive accessibility measures to the results of modal choice modelling. Bunel and Tovar (2014), in the framework of spatial mismatch, examined if the results of local job accessibility modelling depend on the measurement strategy. But in the context of the residential location choice modelling, to our knowledge, little research have analysed the effect of the accessibility measure.…”

“…Other literature reviews of accessibility measures areHandy and Niemeier (1997),Bhat et al (2000),El-Geneidy and Levinson (2006), andBunel et al (2013).2 Although the empirical implications would be largely unchanged, the model can easily be extended to incorporate job separations (seeRogerson et al 2005).…”
