Jeruju (Acanthus ilicifolius) is a Kalimantan tidal swamp plant that is potent to treat Aeromonas hydrophila infection. This study aimed to determine the potential of Jeruju leaf extract as antioxidant and antibacterial agents to inhibit A. hydrophila growth. The research method included the sampling of Jeruju leaves in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Then, the extracted sample was macerated with ethanol. The sample extracts were screened for phytochemical (Harborne) and metabolomic profiles (liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry). The profile of compounds in the extract predicted biological activity using PASS server. Furthermore, the extracts were assayed for antibacterial activity (well diffusion and broth dilution), antioxidant activity 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and total phenol content (Folin-Ciocalteu). The phytochemical screening showed that the Jeruju leaves' ethanol extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenolics, terpenoids, and steroids. The metabolomic profiling was dominated by betaine (41.61%) and choline (40.27%). The prediction of biological activity showed that the Jeruju leaf extract acted as a peptidoglycan glycosyltransferase enzyme inhibitor, DNA synthesis inhibitor, and free radical scavenger. The Jeruju leaf extract can inhibit A. hydrophila growth on glutamate starch phenol agar (9.09%). The ethanol extract of Jeruju leaves showed very strong antioxidant potential (IC 50 = 49.73 ± 1.14 µg/ml and 70.31% DPPH scavenging effect at 96 µg/ml), with a total phenol content of 32,667 ± 1,778.58 mg Gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 g dry extract. These research findings provide potential antioxidant and antibacterial activities for Jeruju (A. ilicifolius) leaves' ethanol extract for inhibiting A. hydrophila growth.

The jeruju plant (Acanthus ilicifolius) is a plant that is affected by the tides and usually gets a higher supply of fresh water. Jeruju plants can be processed into processed products in the form of mangrove tea. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity and analysis of microbial contamination of ready-to-drink jeruju leaf tea based on storage time. Determination of antioxidant activity was carried out by the 2,2-diphenylpicrylhdrazyl (DPPH) method using UV-Visible Spectrophotometry. The microbiological analysis test was carried out based on the Coliform Most Probable Number (MPN). The results of the antioxidant activity test have different antioxidant activity values at each storage time. The results of microbiological analysis testing with a storage period of 3 months contain coliform bacteria, so they are not suitable for consumption.

Background: Acanthus ilicifolius L. has antifungal potential and makes it possible to be a candidate for denture cleanser. This study aims to evaluate the effect of effervescent Acanthus ilicifolius L. extract on antifungal properties and flexural strength acrylic after immersion for three duration times.Method: Extracts were made by maceration method with ethanol. For the antifungal test, effervescent Acanthus ilicifolius L extract was prepared by combining the Acanthus ilicifolius L extract 4% and sodium perborate with two ratios, 1:7 and 1:14. The microdilution method was carried out. Effervescent Acanthus ilicifolius L extract 4% with ratio 1:7 was prepared for the flexural strength test. The fifty-four heat-cured acrylic resin (20x10x2.5mm) were fabricated and divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was immersed in aquadest (control); Group 2 was immersed in sodium perborate; Group 3 was immersed in effervescent Acanthous ilicifolius L. extract. Each group was immersed for 15 min, 8, and 56 hours (n=6). The flexural strength test was performed using Universal Testing Machine.Result: Effervescent Acanthus ilicifolius L. extract exhibited antifungal activity which increased in an effervescent Acanthus ilicifolius L extract-dependent manner significantly (0.57 to 0.50 OD). There were no significant differences between sodium perborate, effervescent_AI1 (1:7) and effervescent_AI2 (1:14). The flexural strength was found to be within the range of 66.1 - 68.3 MPa. There were no significant differences between groups (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Effervescent Acanthus ilicifolius L extract with the ratios 1:7 had a good antifungal effect and appropriate flexural strength after immersion for 15 min, 8, and 56 hours.
