HPLC methods for quality control of Moringa oleifera extract using isothiocyanates and astragalin as bioactive markers

Abstract: Herbal extracts are gaining widespread acceptance as ingredients in cosmetic and health products. Moringa oleifera Lam. is an interesting candidate as it has multiple biological properties. However, methods for quality control of the use of M. oleifera are still required. This study proposes the use of isothiocyanate compounds and astragalin as chemical markers to standardize M. oleifera extracts. Both of these compounds are known to have anti-inflammation properties, and astragalin is also reported to have an… Show more

“…Astragalin, a bioactive natural flavonoid has been well known for multiple pharmacological properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-cancer, and cardioprotective property [ 37 ]. Furthermore, astragalin has been used as a chemical marker for quality control and standardization of MO extract using the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method [ 38 ]. The quality control of plant extraction and its products can be done by checked the present of an active ingredient.…”

“…Residual solvent of ethanol in extract was measured using GC/MS with headspace technique by Central Laboratory (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Astragalin was used as the chemical marker of MO and CC extracts. Astragalin is also known to have antioxidant properties [ 38 ]. Hence, astragalin was used as a bioactive marker for quality control and standardization of extract and lozenge products.…”

“…Going into some details, the MO leaf extract increased alkaline phosphatase activity, collagen type I expression, osteocalcin and transforming growth factor beta (TGF B ) expressions (responsible for deposition of bone matrix ), besides it decreased number of Rankle expression . 1,24,29,31,32 Moreover, a study conducted on upper central extraction socket in a rat model 2018 using mate tea intra-gastric lavage concluded positive effects on alveolar healing at 28 days postoperatively. 4 Our study uniquely used high concentration of water extract (11.7%) suggested to be comparable to ethanol osteoprotective property.…”
