Hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of Lannea coromandelica bark extract (LCBE) was investigated on thioacetamide induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Hepatotoxicity was induced by thioacetamide (TAA) administration (100 mg/kg. s.c). LCBE at different doses (400 and 200 mg/kg) were administered orally to male wistar rats. Thioacetamide caused elevation of serum concentration of AST, ALT, ALP, serum bilirubin and also reduced serum concentration of total protein, albumin, sodium, potassium in animals as compared to control (p < 0.05) but LCBE treated rats showed maximum reduction of AST [(138±5.1) IU/L], ALT [(71 ±2.7) IU/L], ALP [(140 ±1.9) IU/L] with the high dose (400 mg/kg bw) of combined aqueous and alcoholic bark extract. Whereas, serum bilurubin, cholesterol, sugar and LDH content were varied with the treatments but showed higher with the only ethanolic extract at dose of 400 mg/kg. The IC 50 value was observed as (83.28 ±2.12) µg/mL, for DPPH radical scavenging activity. Result concluded that ethanolic extract and combined aqueous and alcoholic bark extract of L. coromandelica showed a potential hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities might be due to the presence of phenolic groups, terpenoids and alkaloids.

The spreading of infectious diseases and the increase in incidence of drug resistance among pathogens have made the search for new antimicrobials inevitable, similarly is the cancer disease. Nowadays, there is a growing need for biosynthesized nanoparticles (NPs) as they are one of the most promising and novel therapeutic agents of biological origin. The unique physicochemical properties of the nano silver (Ag-NPs) as well as nano gold (Au-NPs) when combined with the growth inhibitory capacity against microbes lead to an upsurge in the research on NPs and their potential application as antimicrobials. The phytochemicals of marine algae that include hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amino functional groups can serve as effective metal reducing agents and as capping agents to provide a robust coating on the metal NPs. The biosynthesis of Ag-NPs and Au-NPs using green resources is a simple, environmentally friendly, pollutant-free and low-cost approach. The biosynthesized NPs using algae exerted an outstanding antimicrobial and cytotoxic effect.

Background: Fruits of Dichrostachys glomerata have in the last ten years benefited from special attention as a lipid-lowering plant. Recent studies show that biological activities of some plants depend on granulometry of their powder particles. Aims and Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess antihyperlipidemic, hypolipidemic, and anti-lipase properties of powder fractions of the fruits of Dichrostachys glomerata. Materials and Methods: The groups of rats on which the antihyperlipidemic test was done were fed with High Fat Diet and supplemented with powder fractions: ≥180μm, 212–180μm, 315–212μm, ≥315 μm and unsieved powder of Dichrostachys glomerata fruits at dose of 250 mg/kg for four weeks. For the hypolipidemic test, the diet was changed to normal diet and the powder fraction: 212 – 180μm, was given to rats for four weeks. Lipase inhibitory activity was determined using olive oil as substrate. Results: The antihyperlipidemic test showed that powder fractions reduced levels of total cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol and triglycerides, groups taken powder fractions 212 –180µm and <180µm, presented the lowest values. HDL-Cholesterol levels increased, significant increases were observed in groups fed with powder fractions 315–212µm, 212–180µm, <180µm and unsieved powder. Concerning hypolipidemic test, powder fraction 212–180 µm decreased levels of total cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol and triglycerides. 86.43% of the activity of pancreatic lipase was reduced to a concentration of 25mg/ml with an IC50 of 5mg/ml. Conclusion: Antihyperlipidemic properties of Dichrostachys glomerata fruits depended on powder fractions. Fraction 180-212μm exhibits hypolipidemic effects. The inhibition of pancreatic lipase is one of the mechanisms which could explain lipid- lowering properties of Dichrostachys glomerata fruits.
