The bone formation response of ceramic bone graft materials can be improved by modifying the material's surface and composition. A unique dual‐phase ceramic bone graft material with a nanocrystalline, hydroxycarbanoapatite (HCA) surface and a calcium carbonate core (TrelCor®—Biogennix, Irvine, CA) was characterized through a variety of analytical methods. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the TrelCor surface (magnification 100–100,000X) clearly demonstrated a nanosized crystalline structure covering the entire surface. The surface morphology showed a hierarchical structure that included micron‐sized spherulites fully covered by plate‐like nanocrystals (<60 nm in thickness). Chemical and physical characterization of the material using X‐ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy Energy Dispersive X‐ray Spectroscopy (SEM–EDX) showed a surface composed of HCA. Analysis of fractured samples confirmed the dual‐phase composition with the presence of a calcium carbonate core and HCA surface. An in vitro bioactivity study was conducted to evaluate whether TrelCor would form a bioactive layer when immersed in simulated body fluid. This response was compared to a known bioactive material (45S5 bioactive glass ‐ Bioglass). Following 14‐days of immersion, surface and cross‐sectional analysis via SEM–EDX showed that the TrelCor material elicited a bioactive response with the formation of a bioactive layer that was qualitatively thicker than the layer that formed on Bioglass. An in vivo sheep muscle pouch model was also conducted to evaluate the ability of the material to stimulate an ectopic, cellular bone formation response. Results were compared against Bioglass and a first‐generation calcium phosphate ceramic that lacked a nanocrystalline surface. Histology and histomorphometric analysis (HMA) confirmed that the TrelCor nanocrystalline HCA surface stimulated a bone formation response in muscle (avg. 11% bone area) that was significantly greater than Bioglass (3%) and the smooth surface calcium phosphate ceramic (0%).

Introduction: There is an interest in developing materials with bioactive potential that could block exposed dentinal tubules. This study compared the effects of eggshell and seashell nanoparticles individually or combined with ND:YAG laser on dentinal tubules occlusion and remineralization. Methods: Fifty radicular dentin discs were prepared from freshly extracted human premolars. The smear layer created by cutting was removed using 37% phosphoric acid gel for 15 sec. The discs were divided into five groups according to the applied treatment(A) (n = 10 each): (A1) control, (A2); Nano eggshells, (A3); Nano seashells, (A4); Nano eggshells + Nd: YAG Laser, and (A5); Nano sea shell + Nd: YAG Laser. Each specimen was evaluated for tubular patency and mineral contents before and after each therapy using ESEM-EDXA energy dispersive spectroscopy for the assessment of tubule occlusion and remineralization. Results: ESEM results revealed a statistically significant decrease in the mean percent changes of the dentinal tubules number after the treatment of the experimental groups compared to the control. The greatest percent decrease was recorded in the seashell NPs + Nd: YAG laser, followed by the eggshell NPs + Nd: YAG laser, then Eggshell NPs only and then Seashell NPs only, while the lowest percentage decrease was recorded in the control group. EDXA revealed that the greatest percentage increase in Ca wt% was recorded in the Eggshell + Nd:YAG laser group, followed by Eggshell only, then Seashell only and then Seashell NPs + Nd: YAG laser, while the lowest percent increase was recorded in the control group. The post hoc test revealed no significant difference between the experimental groups. Conclusions: Both eggshell and seashell nanoparticles are effective in the occlusion and remineralization of dentinal tubules. The combined treatments with Nd: YAG laser had no benefits when compared to the effect of treatments alone.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the remineralization potential of phosphorylated chitosan nanoparticles (Pchi) and silver diamine fluoride (SDF) compared to sodium fluoride varnish (NaF) on microhardness of artificial carious lesions in a biomimetic minimally invasive approach that is being regarded as the future of preventive dentistry. Methods The sample size included 40 intact extracted maxillary anterior human teeth. Baseline microhardness was recorded using Vickers hardness test and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Artificial caries-like lesions were created on the exposed enamel by suspending all teeth in demineralizing solution for 10 days in a temperature of 37 °C and then the hardness and EDX were remeasured. Samples were then divided into four main groups: Group A (positive control group) n = 10, treated with NaF, Group B n = 10, treated with SDF, Group C n = 10, treated with Pchi and Group D (negative control group) n = 10 that received no treatment. After treatment, samples were incubated in artificial saliva solution at 37 °C in for 10 days and then reassessed. Data were then recorded, tabulated, and statistically analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis test and Wilcoxon signed test. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to analyze the morphological changes of enamel surface after treatment. Results Groups B and C showed the highest calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) content as well as hardness values, while group B had the highest percentage of fluoride. SEM revealed a smooth layer of mineral formed on the surface of enamel for both groups. Conclusion Pchi and SDF showed the highest increase in enamel microhardness and remineralization potential. Clinical relevance The minimally invasive approach for remineralization could be enhanced using SDF and Pchi.
