Etiology and antibiotic resistance patterns of community-acquired urinary tract infections in J N M C Hospital Aligarh, India

Abstract: Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) remain the common infections diagnosed in outpatients as well as hospitalized patients. Current knowledge on antimicrobial susceptibility pattern is essential for appropriate therapy. Extended-Spectrum beta-Lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria may not be detected by routine disk diffusion susceptibility test, leading to inappropriate use of antibiotics and treatment failure. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution and antibiotic susceptibility patterns… Show more

“…The prevalence of UTI was found to be 10.87% in this study and this rate of prevalence is similar to Akram et al, (2007) (10.86%) but little lower compared to Ahmed et al, (2012) (20.12%). From above results it is observed that Staphylococcus saprophyticus is an important pathogen in sexually active young women.…”

“…The analyses of antibiotic resistance patterns according to the age groups showed that the number of the strains resistant to most of the antimicrobial agents increased with age, except the strains resistant to co-trimoxazole and piperacillin/tazobactam (Figure 1). Some differences in the antibiotic resistance patterns between the urinary tract pathogens isolated from different age groups were observed, however, the rate of resistance to different antibiotics was higher in pediatrics patients compared with that in the middle aged and elderly patients (24) . Another study demonstrated the differences between the age groups in susceptibility patterns among E. coli urinary tract isolates for all tested antibiotics except co-trimoxazole (25) .…”

“…They were incubated aerobically at 37°C for 24 hours (Collee et al, 1996) After completion of incubation, the inoculated culture plates will be observed for presence of any bacterial growth. If growth occurs, colony count will be done to calculate the number of colony forming unit per ml of urine.…”

“…Its annual global incidence is of almost 250 million (Ronald A R, 2001). Worldwide, about 150 million people are diagnosed with UTI each year, costing the global economy in excess of 6 billion US dollars (Akram et al, 2007). Proliferation of bacteria in the urinary tract is the cause of urinary tract infection.…”
