Epidemiological study of feline idiopathic cystitis in Seoul, South Korea

Abstract: Objectives The objective of this study was to investigate potential risk factors for the diagnosis of feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) in cats living in a primarily indoor environment. Methods A case-control study focusing on a cohort of cats attending a first-opinion veterinary practice in Seoul, South Korea, from 2012-2016, was undertaken. Data were collected from cats' owners by questionnaire and analysed using a multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results Fifty-eight cases of FIC and 281 randomly s… Show more

“…2). The most frequent diagnosis was FIC (45, 57.7%), followed by struvite urolithiasis (14,18.0%), urinary tract infection (UTI) (9, 11.5%), unknown urolithiasis (8, 10.3%) and calcium oxalate urolithiasis (2, 2.6%) ( Fig. 3; Table 1).…”

“…Previous studies found that overpopulation was one of the most common causes of FLUTD in cats 5,14,18 . Given the solitary nature of cats, overcrowding may result in abnormal behaviour.…”

“…18 In a comprehensive review by Buffington, a summary of current available evidence is presented, indicating the possibility of an even more complex aetiology of FIC and other possibly stressrelated disease processes, extending outside the urinary system -the Pandora syndrome. 10 While relatively recent case-control studies have confirmed stress and a nervous predisposition as risk factors for FIC, 8,19,20 studies of FLUTD among Norwegian cats have shown that there was no significant difference between cats diagnosed with FIC, bacterial cystitis, urolithiasis or urethral plugs with regard to the cats being defined as nervous or not by their owners. 16 Stress may induce changes in a cat's drinking and/or eating pattern, affecting water intake, which has been found to be of importance in the prevention of additional episodes of FIC, as well as urolith formation.…”

“…Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is one of the health disorders commonly found in veterinary practice. In general, the definition of FLUTD is a syndrome of various types of disorders occurring in the bladder and/or urethra of cats [ 1 , 2 ]. The clinical symptoms that can be found in the case of FLUTD include hematuria, pollakiuria, stranguria, periuria, dysuria, and either accompanied or not accompanied by an obstruction of the urethra [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…Urolithiasis, urethral plugs, infections, neoplasia, anatomical defects, and iatrogenic reasons are some of the causes of FLUTD. However, if after an investigation does not find the cause of FLUTD, the feline patient is said to experience feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) [ 2 , 5 , 6 ]. The diagnosis of FIC is made after eliminating other possible diagnoses in FLUTD [ 2 , 7 ].…”
