Celosia argentea L. and Celosia cristata L. are plants that are differentiated by the intensity and color of their flowering, and can be used as garden or cut-flower, with characteristic propagation by seeds produced in large quantities. The present study aimed to evaluate the physiological and sanitary quality of Celosia argentea and Celosia cristata seeds subjected to the accelerated aging test. The experiment was carried out in October 2016, using a completely randomized design, in a 2 × 6 factorial scheme (two temperatures: 41 and 45 oC and six periods of heat exposure: 0 (control), 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h), with four replicates of 50 seeds, for the two species of cockscomb (C. argentea and C. cristata). The seed lots of the two species of celosia are from the crops in the year 2012 and were stored in a cold chamber (15 oC and 40% RH), with an average moisture content of 11% and a mean germination of 98%. After the accelerated aging test, the physiological and sanitary qualities of the seeds of the two species of celosia were evaluated. We conclude that the accelerated aging proved to be effective for the evaluation of vigor, germination and emergence in the species field, when submitted to temperatures of 41 and 45 oC up to 120 h.

Physalis peruviana é uma planta herbácea, arbustiva e perene, pertence à família Solanaceae. Os seus frutos apresentam alto valor nutricional e propriedades medicinais. Com a crescente importância e sua propagação ser sexuada, buscam-se sementes de alta qualidade. A fase inicial do desenvolvimento de plântulas é delicada e de grande importância; em campo, estão sujeitas a diversos fatores que podem interferir no seu desenvolvimento, como o estresse hídrico. Com isso, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do estresse hídrico na qualidade fisiológica de sementes de P. peruviana. As sementes foram submetidas ao teste de envelhecimento acelerado conduzido a 41 °C e 100% UR por 0; 48; 72 e 96h para obtenção de diferentes lotes. O estresse hídrico foi induzido com PEG-6000 com quatro potenciais osmótico, 0,0 (controle); -0,2; -0,4 e -0,6 MPa. Avaliou-se a germinação e o vigor das sementes (primeira contagem, comprimento da parte aérea e da raiz). O envelhecimento acelerado reduziu a porcentagem de germinação à medida que aumentou o tempo de exposição. Conclui-se que os lotes de sementes de P. peruviana de maior qualidade fisiológica apesentaram melhor desempenho sob estresse hídrico induzido por PEG 6000 até o potencial -0,2 MPa. A restrição hídrica provocou um menor crescimento de plântulas da parte área, no entanto, quando as sementes foram submetidas ao potencial -0,2 MPa, verificou-se um aumento no comprimento radicular.

The demand for high-quality vegetable seeds and the production of vigorous seedlings has increased in recent years, as these characteristics are determining factors of production success. Vegetables are growing in national importance, and kale stands out as an important source of income for small farmers. The objective of this study was to adapt the traditional accelerated aging test methodology with a saturated NaCl solution of kale seeds and evaluate the enzymatic activity after the vigour test. Six batches of kale seeds were used, and the moisture content, weight of one thousand seeds, first germination count, germination, germination speed index, emergence, initial stand, and emergence velocity index were determined. In the accelerated ageing test, the seeds were submitted to the traditional accelerated ageing test method and the accelerated ageing test method with a saturated NaCl solution for ageing periods of 0, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours. Electrophoretic analysis of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) isoenzymes was also performed. The accelerated ageing test, using the traditional method for 72 hours at 41 °C, is adequate for evaluating the physiological potential of kale seeds. The isoenzymatic analyses of SOD, CAT, and ADH demonstrate that the biochemical markers are efficient at differentiating kale seeds after accelerated ageing.
