Covering crops straw production and common bean productivity in no-tillage systemAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the straw production and the effect of different covering plants on some common bean characteristics, in no-tillage system, in Diamantina, MG, Brazil. A radomized block was used as experimental design, with three replications. Treatments were constituted of: Brachiaria decumbens, B. brizantha, Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania, P. maximum cv. Mombaça, Mucuna aterrima, Calopogonio mucunoides cv. Calopogônio, Dolichos lab lab, Cajanus cajan, Crotalaria juncea, fallow and control, on which common bean cultivar Talismã was planted. For covering, the weight of dry matter was evaluated and, for bean plants, the following data were analyzed: the final stand of plants, number of seeds, number of pods, number of seeds per bean, plants height, weight of 100 seeds and the yield of the culture. There was no significant difference among treatments for the variables number of seeds, number of beans, number of seeds per bean and plants height. The largest values of weight of 100 seeds and productivity of bean were obtained when cultivation was made in the no-tillage system on straw of P. maximum cv. Mombaça, B. brizantha, B. decumbens and P. maximum cv. Tanzania. These cover crops also produced sufficient amount of dry matter to make possible the no-tillage system.
We examined the resistance of improved tomato strains rich in 2-tridecanone (2-TD), zingiberene (ZGB) and acyl sugars (AA) to the tomato moth, Tuta absoluta. We also studied whether selection for strains with higher densities of glandular trichomes, and thus presumably strains with higher concentrations of 2-tridecanone, was effective in promoting greater resistance to the moth. The TOM-584 and TOM-679 strains were used as susceptible controls, which have normal concentrations of the three allelochemicals. The improved strain TOM-687, which has a high AA content, has a widely documented resistance and was used as a standard resistant strain. The wild strain PI134417, which is resistant by means of its high 2-TD content, was also used as a standard resistant strain. The experiment was installed in a greenhouse with a completely randomized design. The wild strain PI 134417 was confirmed as being highly resistant. TOM-622 (rich in 2-TD), ZGB-703 (rich in ZGB), and TOM-687 (rich in AA) showed significant reductions in the oviposition rate of the tomato moth, damage to the plants, injury to the leaflets, and the percentage of leaflets attacked in comparison with the control strains (TOM-584 and TOM-679). The levels of resistance to the moth for the TOM-622, ZGB-703, and TOM-687 strains were similar. In general, the genotypes with higher densities of glandular trichomes had greater resistance than the susceptible controls, with the strain BPX-367D-238-02 being particularly notable in its resistance.Index terms: Solanum lycopersicum, genotypes, breeding, indirect selection.
In Brazil, the tomato is cultivated in almost all geographic regions even though its yield is significantly reduced by pests and diseases. Among these pests and diseases, whitefly is a major problem that causes direct and indirect damage due to its role in transmission of geminiviruses. The aim of the present study was to compare the degree of resistance to the silverleaf whitefly of tomato plant lines rich in acyl sugars (AS), zingiberene (ZGB), and 2-tridecanone (2-TD) and to establish whether selection for strains with higher densities of glandular trichomes promotes sufficient resistance to this insect pest. The investigated lines were developed by performing back-crossings in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the interspecific crossing of S. lycopersicum x S. habrochaites var. glabratum 'PI 134417'. Lines rich in AS, ZGB, and 2-TD were tested for their levels of resistance to B. tabaci biotype B. Two tomato plant lines (TOM-584 and TOM-679) with normal AS levels and one wild specimen (PI 134417) with high 2-TD content were used as controls. TOM-687, ZGB-703, and TOM-622 were less preferred by B. tabaci for oviposition, and nymphs exhibited a poorer survival rate on those plant lines than on the susceptible controls, TOM-584 and TOM-679. Allelochemicalrich lines exhibited pest resistance, whereas the controls did not, and the allelochemical-rich lines did not differ significantly from each other in the level of resistance. The results show that the development of tomato plant lines rich in 2-TD, ZGB and AS is an effective option for indirect selection for resistance to B. tabaci biotype B. All lines selected based on high trichome density except for BPX-365F-751-05-01-03 exhibited fewer nymphs than the susceptible controls, indicating that selection for more glandular trichomes was generally effective in promoting increased resistance to the silverleaf white flay.Index terms: Solanum lycopersicum, 2-tridecanone, zingiberene, acyl sugars, indirect selection.
Sweet potato is one of the most cultivated tuberous roots in tropical and subtropical regions permitting several ways of use. Despite its potential use, sweet potato has been little studied. We evaluated the performance of sweet potato roots, forage productivity and its silage at different harvesting times and cultivation environments and we identified the most superior clones under different soil and climatic conditions. Six sweet potato clones (BD-38, BD-45, BD-25, BD-31TO, BD-15 and BD-08) belonging to germplasm bank of UFVJM in addition to two standard cultivars Brazlândia Rosada and Princesa were grown in two cultivation sites (JK campus and Forquilha farm). The trial was conducted in split plots in randomized block design with three harvest times (120, 150 and 180 days after planting). The mean root weight obtained from Forquilha farm was on average 30.2% higher than those obtained from JK campus. Regardless the site, harvesting at 150 days after planting was the optimal time for maximizing root production. The irregularity of root shape increased when the harvesting date was postpone, probably due to greater exposure to environmental factors. Crude protein, fibers, ash and starch, were not affected by local x cultivar interaction except for starch content that depended on the clone and site interaction.
The efficiency of artificial neural networks (ANN) to model complex problems may enable the prediction of characteristics that are hard to measure, providing better results than the traditional indirect selection. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the potential of using artificial neural networks (ANN) for indirect selection against early flowering in lettuce, identify the influence of genotype by environment interaction in this strategy and compare your results with the traditional indirect selection. The number of days to anthesis were used as the desired output and the information of six characteristics (fresh weight of shoots, mass of marketable fresh matter of shoots, commercial dry matter of shoots, average diameter of the head, head circumference and leaf number) as input file for the training of the ANN-MLP (Perceptron Multi-Layer). The use of ANN has great potential adjustment for indirect selection for genetic improvement of lettuce against early flowering. The selection based on the predicted values by network provided estimates of gain selection largest that traditional indirect selection. The ANN trained with data from an experiment have low power extrapolation to another experiment, due to effect of interaction genotype by environment. The ANNs trained simultaneously with data from different experiments presented greater predictive power and extrapolation.
