Endophytic bacteria from Ethiopian coffee plants and their potential to antagonise Meloidogyne incognita

Abstract: Endophytic bacteria were isolated from coffee roots in Ethiopia and identified by Fatty Acid Methyl Ester-Gas Chromatography (FAME-GC). A total of 201 and 114 endophytic bacteria were isolated and identified during the wet and dry seasons, respectively. The most abundant genera were Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Agrobacterium, Stenotrophomonas and Enterobacter. Population densities were higher during the wet season than the dry season ranging from 5.2 × 10 3 to 2.07 × 10 6 cfu (g fresh root weight) −1 . Culture filtr… Show more

“…The densities of bacterial population obtained were similar to those previously reported. On coffee, the endophytic bacteria population densites varied from 5.2 x 10 2 to 2.07 x 10 6 cfu g -1 wet root (Mekete et al 2009). On sweet corn, the popu- (Hallmann et al 1997) and on potato was 10 3 cfu g -1 root (Krechel et al 2002).…”

“…temperature and rainfall), cultivation technique and soil amendment (Hallmann et al 1999;Garbeva et al 2004;Berg and Hallmann, 2006;Hallmann 2001;Zinniel et al 2002). Mekete et al (2009) reported that cultivation techniques greatly affect endophytic bacterial population on coffee plants. Endophytic bacterial population densities in semi-forest and forest coffee were higher than those observed in large-scale coffee plantations.…”

“…Similarly, B. pumilus reduced the gall formation and reproduction of the root-knot nematode (Akhtar and Siddiqui, 2008). Several studies have reported the nematicidal effect of B. pumilus on root-knot nematodes in different agricultural crops (Pinho et al, 2009;Mekete et al, 2009: Oliveira et al, 2007. However, information on active metabolites isolated form B. pumilus and its nematicidal activity have not yet been investigated.…”
