Effects of 2-phenoxyethanol Anaesthesia on Haematological Profile on Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Abstract: Velíšek J., Z. Svobodová, V. Piačková: Effects of 2-Phenoxyethanol Anaesthesia on Haematological Profi le on Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Acta Vet. Brno 2007, 76: 487-492.The aim of this study was to assess changes in haematological profi le of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) after the exposure to anaesthetic 2-phenoxyethanol. The haematological profi le was assessed before, immediately after 10 min of anaesthesia and 24 h after th… Show more

“…Rapid induction was coupled with longer recovery period in the present study. Previous studies on clove oil (Roubach et al 2005;Velisek et al 2005a, b;Hajek et al 2006), 2-phenoxyethanol (King et al 2005;Velisek et al 2007) showed increase in recovery period parallel to decrease in induction time.…”

“…As fish differ in their response to the same anesthetic, use of different agents characterized with various concentrations seems to be necessary (Velíšek et al 2007a). Here, induction and recovery times upon applying foregoing concentrations are shown in Fig.…”

“…The efficacy and anesthetic effects of 2-PE have been proved for different fish species including silver carp (McCarter 1992), platy fish (Guo et al 1992), goldfish (Kaiser and Vine 1998), kutum (Javadi Moosavi et al 2014), rainbow trout (Velíšek and Svobodova 2004b), common carp (Velíšek and Svobodova 2004a;Velíšek et al 2007a) and great sturgeon ). Nevertheless, before using 2-PE for any fish in large scales, it would be better to calibrate it in a laboratory scale.…”

“…No observable effect of the treatment on post-stripping mortality in the present study is consistent with earlier results of Mikolajczyk et al (2008) and Randák (2002). The used anaesthetic concentration of 0.30 ml·l -1 2-phenoxyethanol is considered safe for rainbow trout (Velíšek and Svobodová, 2004;Velíšek et al 2007), thus this anaesthetic may be assumed as safe of for grayling. Evidently, intramuscular injection had no effect on the post-stripping mortality of the females used.…”
