Effect of substituent pattern and molecular weight of cellulose ethers on interactions with different bile salts

Abstract: Some known mechanisms proposed for the reduction of blood cholesterol by dietary fibre are: binding with bile salts in the duodenum and prevention of lipid absorption, which can be partially related with the bile salt binding. In order to gain new insights into the mechanisms of the binding of dietary fibre to bile salts, the goal of this work is to study the main interactions between cellulose derivatives and two types of bile salts. Commercial cellulose ethers: methyl (MC), hydroxypropyl (HPC) and hydroxypro… Show more

“…The CA/ GCA/TCA-binding capacity of MOLPF-CE was 73%/ 80%/80% of that of cholestyramine, suggesting the potential hypolipidaemic effect of MOLPF-CE. The binding capacity between bile acid and polysaccharide has been ascribed to hydrophobic interaction, electrostatic interaction, hydrodynamic restriction and entrapment of bile acids by polysaccharide (Torcello-Gã Mez et al, 2015). These interactions were related to monosaccharide composition, macromolecular feature and viscosity of polysaccharide (Guo et al, 2018).…”

“…Therefore, in the case of HPMC, the lower methyl group content and the presence of the more polar and larger hydroxypropyl groups that inhibit intermolecular association lead to the formation of a weaker consistency system than with MC. 32,33 In short, the firmness of the panna cottas appeared to depend on the type of emulsion and therefore on the type of cellulose employed in the formulation, but in the case of the panna cottas prepared with the HPMC emulsion, it also depended on the percentage of cream replaced (75 or 100%).…”

“…5 However, more contemporary models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) do report colonic Ccl25 transcripts in spontaneous murine colitis, 6 as well as in colonic inflammation induced by dextran sulphate sodium 7 or oxazolone. 8 We have recently published our own work, showing that in contrast to small bowel, CCL25 expression in the human colon strongly correlates with disease activity indices of IBD, and with effector CCR9 + T-cell recruitment.…”

“…7 Recent work has studied these interactions more fully, showing more efficient adsorption of taurodeoxycholate than taurocholate with HPC. 8 We conclude that there is an interaction between HPC, which is not degraded within the GI tract, with more hydrophobic secondary bile acids in the colon. Such interactions could reduce the propensity of raised concentrations of these bile acids to stimulate colonic epithelial water secretion.…”
