Effect of Condensed Tannin of Leucaena and Calliandra Leaves in Protein Trash Fish Silage on In vItro Ruminal Fermentation, Microbial Protein Synthesis and Digestibility

Abstract: Abstract. Two plants as condensed tannin (CT) sources were supplemented to protein trash fish silage (TFS) to observe their effect on in vitro ruminal fermentation product, micobial protein synthesis, and digestibility. CT supplementation on protein trash fish silage was on control proportion (0), under optimum level (2.0%), at optimum level (4.0%), and above optimum level (6.0%) of g TFS); of protein precipitation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with CT from L. leucocephala; and under optimum level (1.5%), at o… Show more

“…Proteolysis inhibition occurs because phenolic compounds cover protein surface, therefore it obstructs enzyme and substrate interaction (Anantasook et al, 2013). Condensed tannin form 1 g Leucaena leaves can bind 26.25 g protein bovine serum albumin (Rimbawanto et al, 2015).…”

“…From Table 2, it can be seen that the CP content of L. leucocephala was ranged from 18.32 to 21.38%. The CP content is lower than other research on L. leucocephala which ranged from 22.16% to 31.8% (Aregheore, 2002;Edward et al, 2012;Soltan et al, 2012;Rimbawanto et al, 2015). The different CP content is allegedly due to the different biomass on leaves and branches fraction.…”

“…The preparation stage includes the extraction of mahogany leaves. Extraction of mahogany leaves was carried out according to Rimbawanto et al (2015) method and determination of total tannin in mahogany leaves based on Makkar (2003). The addition of tannins into soybean meal was done by spraying mahogany leaf extract using a sprayer into soybean meal until homogeneously mixed and then dried at room temperature.…”

“…This has been proven by Cahyani et al (2012) who reported that the protein protection treatment of soybean flour using mangrove leaf tannins was able to reduce fermentability due to the formation of a tanninprotein complex. (Rimbawanto et al 2015) stated that the use of calliandra condensed tannins in trash fish increased total protein digestibility in vitro.…”
