Diagnostic values of detrusor wall thickness, postvoid residual urine and prostate volume to evaluate lower urinary tract symptoms in men

Abstract: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common, affecting approximately 40% of older men (1). LUTS is a recent term for what used to be known as prostatism (2). However, obstructive disorders of the lower urinary tract may also be caused by other diseases, such as bladder neck contractures, urethral valves, or external sphincter dyssynergia. However, for the majority of cases in the male population, the etiology is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Various animal and human studies have revealed that a signifi… Show more

“…Currently, the two most common modalities for prostate imaging and volume measurement are TRUS and MRI (23). The ellipsoid model, which is the original and de facto standard method of calculating prostate volume, uses the formula: transverse diameter×antero-posterior diameter×length×0.52 and assumes that the prostate has a regular ellipsoid shape (24,25). This relatively quick and simple technique can be applied to both ultrasonography and MRI (Figs.…”

“…According to his study, individual parameters like DWT and PVRU values showed positive and strong correlations with IPSS (Spearman's correlation coefficients were 0.463 and 0.623, respectively). 12 Okele et al also concluded DWT assessment is a better investigation to detect BOO in comparison to PVRU, prostate size and urodynamic studies. 89% results of DWT and PFS were in agreement according to him.…”

“…1 Tokgöz Ö described correlation between IPSS and BWT as significant (r = 0.377). 12 As described IPSS is subjective assessment tool which is extremely dependent on patient's IQ level and literacy, therefore it is very difficult to calculate IPSS accurately. BWT on the other hand is an objective assessment tool which can be easily measured using routine ultrasound KUB.…”

“…However, for the majority of cases in the male population, the etiology is benign prostatic hyperplasia. 3 Post void residual urine was recommended by the Fifth International Consultation for the diagnostic work-up of LUTS especially for patient follow up secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia. 4 The PVRU is defined as the volume of urine remaining in the bladder immediately after the completion of micturition.…”
