Development of Potato Late Blight Epidemics: Disease Foci, Disease Gradients, and Infection Sources

Abstract: Natural potato late blight epidemics were studied to assess the relative impact of various inoculum sources of Phytophthora infestans in Southern Flevoland (the Netherlands) from 1994 through 1996. Disease surveys were combined with characterization of isolates for mating type and DNA fingerprint pattern using probe RG57. Seventy-four percent of the commercial potato fields with early foci were clearly associated with nearby infested refuse piles. Characterization of isolates from refuse piles and fields confi… Show more

“…However, there have been particular aspects of organic farming and food that have raised concerns over safety. Namely, recent work shows that organic farms can act as reservoirs of disease (Eltun 1996;Zwankhuizen et al 1998). A consequence of disease problems is the reported higher contamination of organic food by the mycotoxins, patulin (Lovejoy 1994) and fumonisin (Eltun 1996;Schollenberger et al 1999).…”

“…Frequent use of fungicides is neither economical nor beneficial for the environment and human health. Environmental factors play significant role in the development of the epiphytotics (Zwankhuizen and Zadoks, 1998). For the most efficient and sustainable disease management strategies, epidemiological and biological data were used to develop a model for the management of late blight dynamics (Khan and Khan, 2000).…”
