The myth of organic agriculture

Abstract: Although many people are convinced of the superiority of organic agriculture in any form, there are many negative aspects that follow this type of agricultural system. The productivity of organic cropping systems is considerably lower than that of conventional or integrated systems and leads to less land being available for non-agricultural uses such as wildlife habitats, has greater negative impacts on the environment, and reduced sustainability. The absence of synthetic fertilisers or pesticides does not nec… Show more

“…Krystallis and Chryssohoidis (2005) are of the view that consumption of organic food has not caught on with the general public due to relatively "higher prices," "lack of availability," "lack of awareness of the organic concept," and uncertainty over the truthfulness of organic food claims. Pacanoski (2009) argued that low per capital income of some consumers might also be a reason why some consumers are not willing to pay for organic food, but those with higher levels of disposable income will be more willing to pay for organic food.…”

“…Organic farming has beneficial impacts on the cropping environment on a per unit area basis, but not per unit of product (Tuomisto et al 2012), which may be applicable for integrated aquaculture-agriculture. The absence of use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers in organic farming does not necessarily lead to safe and healthy food production in an environmentally sustainable manner (Pacanoski 2009). Compared with conventional farming, there are some limitations to the wider application of organic farming due to require additional land and labor to produce food for human consumption (Floros et al 2010).…”
