Dendritic nanofibers of gold formed by the electron transfer at the interface between water and a highly hydrophobic ionic liquid

Abstract: Gold nanofibers have been found to be formed via a heterogeneous electron-transfer reaction at the ionic liquid|water interface. The tips of the nanofibers show a dendritic structure and the dendrites are bundled to nanofibers except around the tips. The roles of the ionic liquid for the dendritic nanofiber formation have been discussed.

“…Core-shell-like structures with metallic co-deposits of Pd@Pt and Cu@Au ( Figure 7C) were reported, pointing out a new route toward the preparation of uniform and monoatomic shells on noble metals [133,149]. Recent studies on heterogeneous electron transfer between metal complex ions dissolved in the aqueous phase and reducing agents dissolved in ionic liquids have received increased attention [150,151]. Novel metal nanostructures of gold such as dendritic nanofibers, nanorods or worm-like nanowires have been synthesized, meaning that electrified waterionic liquid interface can lead to the synthesis of a wide record of new nanostructures.…”

“…To facilitate the structure characterization of the product, recent efforts are to directly grow 2D Au DNSs on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) sample grids via galvanic replacement reaction or the seeded growth . In addition, the growth of transferable Au DNSs at the air/water or liquid/liquid interface has been presented, but these procedures need the assistance of special additive or surfactant. However, as we know, besides their shape/size, the surface condition of as‐synthesized gold nanomaterials also plays an important role in eventual applications.…”
