Medicinal plants show bioactivities against various ailments due to the presence of biologically active phytochemical constituents. 1 Our present study is on Saussurea simpsoniana (Field & Gard.) Lipsch and Vincetoxicum arnottianum (Wight) Wight. Saussurea simpsoniana (Field & Gard.) Lipsch (Asteraceae) is a herb, and its local name is Boshi Phonar in Gilgit, Pakistan. The decoction of S. simpsoniana has been reported for the treatment of respiratory diseases like asthma, cough, and pneumonia. 2 Furthermore, this plant species has been reported to exhibit antibacterial, 2 and insecticidal 3 properties. The preliminary phytochemical screening 2 has revealed the presence of saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, etc. in S. simpsoniana. Vincetoxicum arnottianum (Wight) Wight (Syn: Cyanchum arnottianum Wight), (Apocynaceae), has recently been reported for its antitumor activity. 4 Apocynaceae consists of 375 genera and 3700-5100 species, which are mainly found in tropical and subtropical areas all over the world. 5 There are 19 genera and 26 species of family Apocynaceae in Pakistan, mostly found in North Punjab,

The potential of natural products in cancer prevention and treatment has received worldwide interest in recent years from the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industry point of view. Medicinal plants have been traditionally used as they exhibit a wide range of therapeutic effects due to their phytoconstituents which play an active role against oxidative stress-associated diseases such as cancer. They may block or suppress multistage carcinogenesis mainly through mechanistic regulation of the myriad of deregulated cellular pathways. Bioactive constituents isolated from different plants have been shownto induce reversal of drug resistance, restoration of apoptosis, inhibition of cell proliferation and stimulation of the immune system, etc. These phytochemicals such as terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, carotenoids, alkaloids, tannins, anthraquinones, and saponins can be present in any of the plant parts like root, stem, leaves, bark, seed, flower, and fruit which produce a definite physiological response in the organism. Turkish flora is a rich reservoir of wide-ranging bioactive chemicals having premium pharmacological importance. This review provides an overview of the anticancer properties of various Turkish medicinal plant species against different type of cancers via anti-proliferative, genotoxic and cytotoxic effects.

Objective: Plants have significant potential effects in treating wounds. Some plants are also used in traditional medicine for their wound healing properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant and in vitro wound healing activities of Centaurea virgata. Methods: The antioxidant activities of extracts were examined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) methods. The total phenolic content was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (FCR) method. In addition, the antiproliferative activity of different extracts on fibroblast cells was performed by MTT method and in vitro wound healing activity of ethanol extract of C. virgata was determined by scratch assay. Results: Ethyl acetate fraction of ethanol extract of C. virgata (CVEA) had the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity with an IC 50 value of 138.7 μg/mL. According to ABTS results, it was determined that the CVEA had a stronger radical scavenging activity than the other extracts. Hexane (CVH) and aqueous ethanol fractions (CVAE) revealed poor antioxidant activity with IC 50 values of 824.8 µg/mL and 610.3 µg/mL, respectively. On the other hand, among all of the extracts analysed, it was found that phenolic content of CVEA was higher than other extracts. Except for CVAE, other extracts showed antiproliferative activity depending on the dose. Conclusion: According to the obtained results, our finding suggests that CVAE has a migratory effect on fibroblasts and that CVAE might be a potential therapeutic agent for wound healing.
