Chemical and Nutritional Characteristics of United States Soybeans and Soybean Meals

Abstract: Two experiments were conducted to determine U.S. soybean meal (SBM) variation. In experiment 1, SBM from 55 U.S. processors was evaluated. Significant (P < 0.05) but numerically small differences were detected in dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) concentrations. Crude protein (CP) concentrations (51.6-54.6%) were higher (P < 0.05) in SBM produced in the southern U.S. Lipid and total dietary fiber concentrations also differed (P < 0.05). The protein dispersibility index was affected (P < 0.05) by the sour… Show more

“…Soybean (Glycine max) is composed of macronutriments such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. Protein content varies between 36% and 46% depending on the variety (Garcia et al, 1997;Grieshop and Fahey, 2001;Grieshop et al, 2003). The major portion of the protein component is formed by storage proteins such as 7S globulin (b-conglycinin) and 11S globulin (glycinin), which represent about 80% of the total protein content (Garcia et al, 1997).…”

“…Despite variations, the obtained values are similar to those found by Rieger et al (2008), who studied the composition of soybean meals of the West and Southwest regions of Paraná, and Zambom et al (2001), who studied the nutritional value of feed for ruminants in the North West of Paraná. The CP, however, showed variations depending on the seasons, but these variations are not due specifically to climatic conditions, but rather to the origin of the grains used for bran production (Grieshop et al, 2003) and the shell proportion added to the bran (Zambom et al, 2001).…”
