The dairy industry is characterised by a wide diversity of production systems. In this diverse environment, some of the difficulties can be minimised through the grouping of production units through the study of typology. The objective was to characterise the systems of milk production from West Parana State by considering production rates, area, power, facilities, and marketing of milk. To this end, 735 semistructured interviews with dairy farmers were performed by using a questionnaire for management practices and feed that is used on the farms. To obtain the explanatory variables used for principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), a homogeneous division of 735 farmers in five groups was used. Ten per cent of producers were randomly selected for the performance of field visits to the properties, where a new questionnaire was applied with specific points regarding feeding management on the property, and feed was collected to determine its composition. The collected data were tabulated and feed was ranked based on the classification proposed by the NRC (2001). Analyses of feed were carried out in the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition of Unioeste. The West Parana State has five groups of dairy production systems. There is great variability in the fresh forages that are used, but maize silage is the main forage utilised for fermented feed, and concentrate supplementation is adopted by more than 60% of farms during both seasons. Changes in the levels of feed components are high among systems. Key words: Animal feed. Characterisation of production. Composition of foods. Dairy farming. ...
Milk production in Brazil is complex, as it depends on a wide base of small-scale producers employing diverse strategies. In recent years, the supply chain has undergone considerable structural changes, increasing the need for knowledge and characterization of milk-production activities. Therefore, the objective proposed in this study was to characterize rural properties according to various aspects of production in order to identify the dairy cattle production systems of Western Paraná. To this end, 735 interviews were conducted through semi-structured questionnaires administered to dairy farmers using a questionnaire tab for the diversity of management practices in production systems. Data were tabulated and processed by SPSS-v.18, using multiple correspondence analysis: ACM and cluster analysis (hierarchical cluster). The first two dimensions grouped 71.9% of the total variance: DIM1 as 49.4% and DIM2 as 22.5%. Using cluster analysis, five distinct and homogeneous groups (G1, G2, G3, G4, and G5) of production systems were formed. These systems shared the common feature of small properties and were supported primarily by manual labor performed by family members. It is concluded that various milk producing groups exist in the city, with respect to the characteristics of production systems: ownership structure, squad, and how producers mobilize and act on the factors of production. The typology carried out from these characteristics demonstrates a useful tool for action and technical assistance in developing strategies for the industry.

-The objective of the present study was to characterize the food sources, as well as the composition and quality of milk obtained from household farms of western Paraná State (Brazil) with and without technical assistance during the different seasons. For such, 24 properties were selected, 12 of which only received assistance and technical support. Four milk samples were taken (summer, autumn, winter and spring) to assess the physicochemical composition, somatic cell count and total bacterial count and feed supplied to the animals to assess the chemical composition (crude protein, ash, dry matter and neutral detergent fiber). The data were analyzed in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement; the first factor was the presence and absence of technical assistance and the second factor was the four seasons of the year. Due to the dairy tradition of properties in the region, technical assistance had no significant effects on the health and nutritional quality of food, the number of animals, the production, or total bacterial count, which suffered oscillations only depending on the seasons of the year. However, the presence of assistance contributed to reducing somatic cell counts of milk produced and marketed. The technical assistance does not affect the quality of forages and concentrates used or the milk composition; however, it improves the sanitary quality of the milk produced throughout the four seasons of the year in household farms of western Paraná.
The objective of this study was to evaluate milk quality for somatic cell count (SCC) analysis and total bacterial count (TBC) in agroecological production systems and conventional systems, relating them to the frequency of milking practices and types of facilities. The study was conducted in 2013 and 2014, in the western region of Paraná State, Brazil. We used a semi-structured questionnaire to identify management practices of producers in the 17 dairy systems (DS) in the city of Diamante d'Oeste and the 27 DS in Toledo. Milk sampling was performed monthly. Data were analyzed using two statistical methods. These were then used to create cross tabulation of groups with production systems and practices that can influence product quality. Cluster classification analysis allowed grouping of the initial 44 production systems into three homogeneous groups: Group 1, with better quality regarding the normative instruction 62 (NI62), with average values of SCC 407.37 (cells × 1000/mL) and TBC 210.50 (cfu × 1000/mL); Group 2, with SCC 328.50 (cells × 1000/mL) and TBC 699.75 (cfu × 1000/mL), both outside the NI62 parameters; and Group 3, with SCC 680.25 (cells × 1000/mL), considered low-and high-value TBC 1775.25 (cfu × 1000/mL), out of NI62. The results indicate that management practices and some other preventions adopted during milking are the determining factors of milk quality. Therefore, SCC and TBC levels are not determined by agroecological or conventional production systems, but rather, these levels are determined by the practices differentially adopted by the production systems.
