Typology of dairy production systems from West Parana State based on production indices and feed used

Abstract: The dairy industry is characterised by a wide diversity of production systems. In this diverse environment, some of the difficulties can be minimised through the grouping of production units through the study of typology. The objective was to characterise the systems of milk production from West Parana State by considering production rates, area, power, facilities, and marketing of milk. To this end, 735 semistructured interviews with dairy farmers were performed by using a questionnaire for management practic… Show more

“…Dairy production systems had an average of 48 hectares, 42.2 dairy cows, and produced an average of 322.15 liters of milk per day (Table 4). The heterogeneity observed in these DPS is consistent with the findings of other studies carried out in Paraná (IPARDES, 2009;BRITO et al, 2015;YABE et al, 2015;NEUMANN et al, 2016;ZIMPEL et al, 2017). The majority (78.9%) of milk producers relied on a second source of income.…”

“…Dairy production systems in Paraná are highly heterogeneous. Small-and large-scale producers with different technological and productive capacities coexist in the sector (BRITO et al, 2015;YABE et al, 2015;NEUMANN et al, 2016;ZIMPEL et al, 2017). Half of the producers gain more than 50% of their income from milk production.…”

“…11,326 (BRASIL, 2006). The factors that best described corporate and family dairy farms were determined using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (BÁNKUTI et al, 2014;NEUMANN et al, 2016;YABE et al, 2015). The EFA is a multivariate statistical technique of interdependence that condenses a set of correlated variables into a smaller number of factors.…”

“…This variable reduction technique can be used to create indicators for decision-making (FÁVERO et al, 2009a). Several authors have used EFA to generate indicators for dairy production systems (BRITO et al, 2015a(BRITO et al, , 2015bLANGE et al, 2016;NEUMANN et al, 2016;ZYMPEL et al, 2016).…”

“…This is associated with organizational technical factors, such as collaboration between teaching, research and extension institutions, in addition to credit associations, the use of specialized labor, the selection of a herd with greater productivity and an active cooperative structure (Passetti, Eiras, Gomes, Santos, & Prado, 2016). However, there is a great heterogeneity between the producing regions (Capucho & Parré, 2012;Telles, Bacchi, & Shimizu, 2017) and the respective milk producers in Paraná (Lange et al, 2016;Neumann et al, 2016;Passetti et al, 2016). This difference is primarily characterized by the adoption of production techniques, feed supplementation for the dairy herd and genetic enhancements.…”
