Carbon dioxide emission factor estimation from Indonesian coal

Abstract: Climate change will become the priority for the air quality management. It focuses more on carbon dioxide emission. Indonesia which has power generation dominated by coal combustion is expected to develop the national CO2 emission factor. Due to the high variation in Indonesia coal rank and its growing magnitude in CO2 emission caused by the future coal-fired power plant development, the characteristic emission value becomes an important concern. The method used in this study is developed from the IPCC Guideli… Show more

“…To calculate CO2 emissions and pollutants (i.e., NOx and SO2), the calculation combines data input by users with the emission factor, the electricity consumption factor for each appliance, electricity transmission and distribution losses, the thermal efficiency of the power plant, and the power plant fuel mix from various literature (EPA 2020; NEC 2019; Unbound Solar n.d.; Wijaya and Tezuka 2013;Damayanti and Khaerunissa 2018).…”

“…The EFs for electricity are subject to the type of power plant (PP) that supplies the electricity to the grid. This Technical Note uses EFs from the studies of Damayanti and Khaerunissa (2018), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) (2020), and the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (1999). These studies distinguish GHG and air pollutant EFs based on the fuel types used in power plants (i.e., coal, natural gas, and fuel oil), provided in Table 7.…”

“…The literature review analyzes geological factors, maceral analysis, depositional environment related to the rank and form of sulfur, and the influence of sulfur in spontaneous combustion of coal. The rank and form of sulfur will greatly affect the formation of CH 4 gas emissions in spontaneous combustion of coal [Damayanti & Khaerunissa, 2018;Deng, et al, 2015;Gao, et al, 2022;Wang & Chen, 2015]. Research on the effect of sulfur on CH 4 gas emissions in spontaneous combustion of coal is mostly carried out in the form of inorganic sulfur, especially pyrite and sulfate minerals rather than organic sulfur [Gao, et al, 2022].…”

“…Directive 2003/87/EC also requires the use of 2 CO k determined by the elemental composition of coal. Table 1 also shows the values of these factors for thermal coal of Ukraine [12], Great Britain and Germany [13], South Korea [14], Indonesia [15], and the United States [16]. The values of these factors for anthracite for diff erent sources compared to the IPCC values have a discrepancy within 12.9 %, for hard coalwithin 3.7 %, for natural gas -within 0.7 %, for fuel oilwithin 5 %.…”

“…In the literature, there are methods in which the carbon emission factor k C is used to calculate carbon dioxide emissions generated in coal combustion plants; the factor is the ratio of the carbon content of coal to its lower calorifi c value. The СО 2 emission factor can be written as [3,15]…”
