The purpose of this paper is to explore the nature of gender-based bullying in a kindergarten. Such places are often depicted as innocent spaces, and hence, teachers often overlook the fact that bullying could also take place. This paper is based on an ethnographic study, conducted in a kindergarten in Indonesia. Twenty-eight children and four teachers participated in this study. Drawing from feminist poststructuralist approaches, this paper illuminates the kindergarten as a site where heteronormativity is promoted. Using the experiences of young boys who do not conform to the dominant and traditional gender values in the school, the findings demonstrate how gender-based bullying takes place. The findings also reflect how increasing homophobia in Indonesia is channelled in kindergarten. The paper shows how larger socio-political discourses in Indonesia influence the school. Finally, it is suggested that teachers in early childhood education (ECE) should have a gendered lens in understanding children's play to tackle gender-based bullying in the school context.

ResumoO objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar a ocorrência do bullying nos cursos de Ciências Contábeis e Administração de duas universidades públicas mineiras. O procedimento de pesquisa foi um survey e o instrumento de coleta de dados foi respondido por 773 alunos matriculados nesses cursos em 2014. Os resultados desta pesquisa sugerem maior incidência do bullying entre os estudantes do sexo masculino; maior ocorrência dessa prática na sala de aula; que o bullying é confundido com uma brincadeira; que a maioria dos agressores acredita que a prática do bullying é engraçada e a maioria das testemunhas finge não ver as agressões, pois sente medo de passar a ser o alvo delas. Infere-se que a reflexão, a prevenção e o combate do bullying precisam acontecer também no ensino superior, principalmente, com o auxílio de profissionais das áreas de Educação e Psicologia.Palavras-Chave: bullying; ensino superior; pesquisa. The incidence of Bullying in Business Administration and Accounting Courses AbstractThe objective of this research is to analyze the occurrence of bullying in the courses of Accounting and Administration of two public universities in Minas Gerais. The research procedure was a survey and the data collection instrument was answered by 773 students enrolled in these courses in 2014. The results of this research suggest a higher incidence of bullying among male students; greater occurrence of this practice in the classroom; the bullying is mistaken for a joke; the most part of the perpetrators believe that bullying is funny and the most part of the witnesses pretend not to see aggression because they are afraid of becoming their target. It is inferred that the reflection, prevention and combat of bullying must also happen in higher education, especially with the help of professionals in the areas of Education and Psychology.Keywords: bullying; higher education; aggressor; research. Incidencia del Bullying en los Cursos de Administración y Ciencias Contables ResumenEl objetivo de esta investigación es analizar la incidencia del bullying en los cursos de Ciencias Contables y Administración de dos universidades públicas mineras. El procedimiento de investigación fue un survey y el instrumento de recolecta de datos fue respondido por 773 alumnos ingresados en esos cursos en 2014. Los resultados de esta investigación enseñan más incidencia del bullying entre los estudiantes del sexo masculino; más incidencia de esa práctica en la sala de clase; que el bullying es confundido con una broma; que gran número de los agresores cree que la práctica del bullying es graciosa y la mayoría de los testigos finge no ver las agresiones, pues siente miedo de pasar a ser el blanco de ellas. Se deduce que la reflexión, la prevención y el combate del bullying necesitan suceder también en la enseñanza universitaria, principalmente con la ayuda de profesionales de las áreas de Educación y Psicología.Palabras Clave: bullying; enseñanza universitaria; investigación.
