Breastfeeding self-efficacy: a cohort study

Abstract: Objective: Evaluate the clinical use of the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale as predictive of early weaning and verify if women who had higher self-efficacy scores breastfed for longer periods. Methods: Cohort study developed with 100 postpartum mothers. Research instrument used: Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form. The feeding was monitored on the 7th, 15th, 30th, 45th and 60th day, by phone. Results: The mean duration of exclusive breastfeeding was 53.2 days (SD 14.2). Most mothers (82.3%) had scor… Show more

“…Thus, they allow the elaboration of individualized and effective interventions to solve the difficulties experienced in this process and prevent early weaning, since women with low self-efficacy are three times more likely to interrupt breastfeeding. (25)(26)(27) Analyzing the existence of a possible association between PPD and self-efficacy, the results of the present study show a cause and effect relationship between the outcomes, showing that women with a high index of PPD symptoms in the EPDS present a reduction of 11.84 points in the BSES score value. In addition, puerperal women with moderate or high self-efficacy had a score reduced by 27.4% or 38.8% in the scale to detect postpartum depression symptomatology (EPDS).…”

“…18 This way, knowing the maternal disposition to breastfeed can be a way to predict whether women will maintain breastfeeding for the recommended time, which would support the professionals in identifying difficulties and fragilities, giving time to establish and choose interventions for providing selfconfidence support. 19 The educational brochure prepared was aimed at empowering the puerperal women for breastfeeding self-efficacy through health education, i.e., fostering their autonomy and motivating them to feel empowered and prepared for breastfeeding. Emphasis is given to the encouragement provided by nurses, which can be initiated during prenatal care, through the formation of pregnant women groups, and in other moments, such as when staying in the rooming-in unit and during childcare consultations, in addition to incentive campaigns for breastfeeding.…”
