Show more

“…No data are available for comparison with the observed mono-and diglyceride levels. The cholesterol levels are within the range of those reported by other authors (6,15,23,(25)(26)(27). The increase of hepatic cholesterol levels in patients with ALD is consistent with observations by DeCarli and Lieber (28) that hepatic cholesterol levels increased slightly in rats after prolonged feeding of ethanol.…”

“…The mean concentration of hepatic triglycerides is within the range of values observed by others in normal livers (6,15,23,24) and in steatosis associated with ALD or obesity (15,16,(24)(25)(26)(27). No data are available for comparison with the observed mono-and diglyceride levels.…”

“…The use of phospholipids as a reference substance was due to the difficulties encountered in weighing the small amounts of the biopsy material (evaporation of fluid, inclusion of washing fluid, etc.). It is generally accepted that only triglycerides increase during the development of a fatty liver (11,14, IS), while phospholipids do not change at all, or very little, which is in accordance with current views on phospholipid metabolism (1, 6). Recently published data on the triglyceride and phospholipid concentrations of human liver biopsies obtained with a Menghini needle showed a slight decrease of phospholipid values (less than 20 per cent if phospholipid mass/ (biopsy wet weightlipid mass of biopsy) was calculated) while the triglycerides increased by approx.…”

The triglyceride concentration was directly proportional to the histological degree of fatty liver.…”

“…Morphometric studies were conducted on 3-to 4-~m-thick sections to evaluate non-fatty and fatty parenchymous tissue and fibrous trabeculae (1 1). Biochemically estimated quantity of fat accumulation shows a high correlation with morphometric assessments (13). The analysis was performed with a Leitz Orthoplan I1 microscope equipped with a x 10 eyepiece and a x10 objective lens with a 100-point net micrometer inserted into the eyepiece.…”
