Astyanax guaricana (Ostariophysi: Characidae), a new species from the rio Cubatão drainage, Paraná State, Southern Brazil

Abstract

In this paper we describe a new species of Astyanax collected in the Atlantic Rainforest, in tributaries to the rio Cubatão, coastal basin of the Paraná State, Brazil. The new species presents a combination of characters that allows its allocation in the A. scabripinnis species complex and differs from congeners by the possession of 18 to 22 branched anal-fin rays; 40 to 43 perforated scales in lateral line; dentary teeth decreasing abruptly in size from the fifth tooth; 15 to 17 circumpeduncular series of scales and two vertical humeral spots.Nesse trabalho é descrita uma espécie nova de Astyanax coletada na Floresta Atlântica, em tributários do rio Cubatão, bacia costeira do estado do Paraná, Brasil. A espécie nova possui uma combinação de caracteres que permite sua inclusão no complexo A. scabripinnis e difere das congêneres por apresentar 18 a 22 raios ramificados na nadadeira anal; 40 a 43 escamas perfuradas na linha lateral; dentes do dentário reduzindo de tamanho abruptamente a partir do quinto dente; 15 a 17 séries de escamas circumpedunculares e duas manchas umerais verticais.

A new species of Astyanax (Characiformes: Characidae) from the rio de Contas basin, Bahia, Brazil

“…A total of 79 species of Astyanax was described in the last 20 years (Fricke et al, 2019), being one of the fish genera with higher expansion on its richness knowledge. Advances in alpha taxonomy of the ichthyofauna of the Brazilian coastal drainages contributed with 21 of those descriptions, being 11 from the Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion (e.g., Rangel-Pereira, 2012;Birindelli et al, 2013;Lima et al, 2013;Mattos, Costa, 2018;Barreto et al, 2018;Burger et al, 2019); seven from rivers draining the Laguna dos Patos freshwater ecoregion (e.g., Lucena et al, 2013;Bertaco, Vigo, 2015), one species from the Tramandaí-Mampituba freshwater ecoregion (Bertaco, 2014), one species from the Ribeira de Iguape freshwater ecoregion (Silva et al, 2019), and one from the Southeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion (Oliveira et al, 2013). Particularly to the NMAF, nine of the 11 species mentioned are from river basins inserted in the Bahia State, highlighting the rio Paraguaçu basin, with six described species, all of them apparently endemic to this basin (A. brucutu, A. epiagos, A. hamatilis, A. lorien, A. rupestris, and A. sincora).…”

Astyanax douradilho, a new characid fish from the rio Tramandaí system, southern Brazil (Characiformes: Characidae)

“…Astyanax douradilho is herein assigned to Astyanax according to the definition of the genus given by Eigenmann (1921Eigenmann ( , 1927, which is still used (Lucena et al 2013a,b;Oliveira et al 2013) due to the absence of a cladistic definition of the genus. The new species recognized herein does not fit the definitions of the A. bimaculatus (sensu Garutti & Britski 2000) and A. scabripinnis (sensu Bertaco & Lucena 2006) species complexes.…”
