Antioxidant Effect of Chlorella vulgaris on Physiological Response of Rat Induced by Carbon Tetrachloride

Abstract: Chlorella vulgaris is an algae with high nutrition content. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) is a hepatotoxic chemical. The aims of this study were to determine the effect of C. vulgaris extract on the physiological response of liver such as MDA, SOD and GPx activity on rat after induced by CCl 4 exposure as well as to determine the effective dose of C. vulgaris extract as antioxidant that can neutralize CCl 4 exposure. This research was conducted experimentally with Completely Randomized Design that consists of 6… Show more

“…Many plants that has long been used as an alternative medicine in treating infertility problem are Eurycoma longifolia Jack. (Pratomo, 2012), Cordyline fruticosa (Amudha & Rani, 2016), and Chlorella vulgaris (Hernayanti & Simanjuntak, 2019). Plant ability to resolve infertility is assumed to be caused by the bioactive compound compositions which can influence folliculogenesis and steroidogenesis.…”

“…Many of beneficial effects of CV revealed through animal models. In study on male rats using of 5 mg/100 g body weight of CV, presented a protectant effect on hepatic toxicity (Hernayanti and Simanjuntak, 2019). CV accelerated curative effect has been demonstrated via topical application of CV on wound in this study [23].…”

“…On the other hands, antioxidant marker GPx enzyme exhibited near control level, whereas levels of MDA were inhibited when a male rats treated with CV for 30 days. The elevation may be attributed to existence of Glutathione content as a component of CV which act to reduce ROS generation via GPx utilization of Glutathione as electron donor [56].…”

“…C. pyrenoidosa, a single-celled microalga that grows in freshwater, is widely used in Japan and is consumed as a food supplement known to have beneficial effects on immune function. Chlorella is rich in antioxidants (Hernayanti & Simanjuntak, 2019;Yu et al, 2019;Wan et al, 2021). It was reported that Chlorella extract has an anticancer effect on hepatocellular cancer cell line (HepG2) and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cell (Adzahar et al, 2021).…”

“…Due to these properties, it has been reported that it has a protective effect, especially in tissues exposed to intense oxygen and, therefore, oxidative stress. We can add hepatoprotective to this protective effect (Hernayanti & Simanjuntak, 2019;Zafar et al, 2021;Zhang et al, 2019c;Capek et al, 2020). C.…”
