Lansium domesticum Coor. is a fruit species from the Meliaceae family, which is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. Local citizens call it langsat, longkong, or duku and have used it as traditional medicine. The seeds of L. domesticum are used as a fever medicine, its bark is used to treat scorpion sting, and its leaves are used to repel mosquitoes. Because of its various uses, it is necessary to explore the antiradical potential of L. domesticum seeds. This study aims to determine the antiradical potential of L. domesticum seeds extract and fractions by using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and to discover compounds that act as antiradical. Lansium domesticum seed powder was macerated with methanol, and then the extract was concentrated using a rotary evaporator and fractionated by n-hexane and ethyl acetate. The antiradical assay was conducted on extract and fractions by using DPPH radicals. Phenolic and flavonoid contents from extract and fractions were also tested. The ethyl acetate fraction obtained strong antiradical potential with an IC50 value of 8.938 � 0.031 �g/mL. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of ethyl acetate fraction were higher with values ??of 58.25 � 0.501 mgGAE/g sample and 75.123 � 0.175 mgQE/g sample, respectively. Correlation of phenolic and flavonoid contents, which inhibited radicals had R2 values ??of 0.9182 and 0.7658. Ethyl acetate fraction of L. domesticum seeds had very strong antiradical activity. Further isolation is expected to be conducted to discover which compounds are the most responsible as antiradical.

This research was conducted to extract polyphenols, antioxidants, and antimicrobial red and purple roselle calyces (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) with maceration techniques using different types of solvents. Total polyphenols were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The antioxidant activity was expressed as the DPPH reduction, and antimicrobial activity were evaluated against the Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacterial strains. The most significant extraction yield was obtained using ethanol at a concentration level of 80% in two rosella varieties (red and purple). In contrast, the polyphenol content of purple roselle was relatively higher than that of red roselle. The maximum total polyphenols in the extraction process in purple roselle with methanol 80% (27.60 mg GAE/g), while the minimum phenolic (9.50 mg GAE/g extract) in red roselle with 50% ethyl acetate solvent. The antioxidant activity increased in the antioxidant test, where 80% methanol extract showed the highest scavenging antioxidant activity, 73.84 ± 0.53% and 62.80 ± 1.57% for purple and red roselle calyces. The inhibition zone was obtained against E. Coli (13.45 ± 3.30 mm) on the purple roselle, and the inhibition zone was obtained for S. aureus (11,4 ± 0,04) on the red roselle. It was concluded that red and purple roselle calyces are a prospective source of antioxidant and antimicrobial phenolic compounds.

Background: In recent years, medicinal plants have received considerable attention due to the search for novel bioactive compounds. In this optic, we have been interested in Artemisia judaica subsp. Sahariensis, a Saharan species widely used in phytotherapy by the Tuaregs of the Ahaggar. Objective: This study aims to evaluate and optimize the biological activities of this plant in order to valorize its bioactive compounds. Methods: For this purpose, an extraction with methanol (70%) was carried out, then a liquid-liquid fractionation, using solvents with increasing polarity: diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water. We realized an analysis of phenols, flavonoids and evaluation of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in addition to the UPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis of the fractions. Results: The reducing effect was proportional to the solvent polarity. The crude extract gave the best reducing power (17.55±3.06µg/mL), better phenols and flavonoids contents (20.35±0.5 mgGAE/gTDM), (10.35±0.56 mgGAE/gTDM) respectively compared to its fractions. The DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay showed that the ethyl acetate fraction was the most active with the lowest IC50 value (inhibitory concentration to 50% of DPPH) (41.43±0.24 µg/ml) followed by n-butanol (58.53±0.20 µg/mL), diethyl ether (135.07±6.18 µg/mL) and aqueous (226.41±1.51 µg/mL) fractions (p<0.0001). Moreover, hydromethanolic extract gave an IC50 value of 114.05±3.37 µg/mL. The antimicrobial effect was observed on all clinical multi-resistant bacteria tested except Klebsiella pneumoniae, which was resistant. The most important effect was observed by the ethyl acetate fraction against the fungal strain Candida albicans. Various phenolic acids and flavonoids (flavones, flavonols, flavanones) were detected and could be responsible for these bioactivities. Conclusion: We can conclude that liquid-liquid extraction with solvents of increasing polarity plays a major role in optimizing the biological activity of this plant, which contains polyphenols and can therefore be valued as a source of natural antioxidants and antimicrobials.
